Cyril Peter Hanken

Cyril Peter Hanken, 77, of Ossian, died Friday, April 28, 2000, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis., after a short illness.

A funeral mass was held Monday, May 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Msgr. Clems Hawes officiating.

Diane Stee was the organist. The St. Francis adult choir and congregational singing included "Be Not Afraid," "On Eagle's Wings", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art".

Readers were Nick Gallinaro and Germaine Hanken. Offertory gifts were received by Inez Gallinaro, Vernon Hanken and Roger Hanken.

Casket bearers were Brett Hanken, Dale Hanken, Michael Gallinaro, David Hanken, Dan Hanken, Cory Hanken and Steve Hanken.

Honorary bearers were Fredrick Scheidel, Kenneth Anfinson, Wilfred Lansing, Victor Halvorson, George Peck and Denis Miller.

In honorary attendance were the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2073 and American Legion Brockman-Hammersland Post No. 503.

Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Cyril was born Nov. 12, 1922, the son of John A. and Agnes (Timp) Hanken in rural Ossian.

He was baptized Nov. 13, 1922 by the Rev. Msgr. M.J. Thiltgen and confirmed in his faith Dec. 16, 1939, by the Most Rev. Francis J. L. Beckman at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Cyril attained his education by attending De Sales School.

He joined the United States Army in 1944 and served during World War II in Japan, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.

On Nov. 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lucille Hemesath at St. Francis de Sales Church by the Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen. They started farming in the Ossian area and later moved to the Hanken home farm southwest of Castalia.

Lucille died July 14, 1962. Cyril then moved to Ossian and was employed by Reilly Construction Co.

On Oct. 25, 1969, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Collins at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church by the Rev. Msgr. V. H. Peters. Evelyn died May 14, 1993.

Cyril was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, its Rosary Society, the Knights of Columbus No. 2073, and the Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503.

He was employed by Reilly Construction from 1963 through June 23, 1981, and then again from May 4-Sept.9, 1987.

Cyril enjoyed playing cribbage, cards and bingo with many friends and relatives.

Survivors include one sister, Inez and Nicholas Gallinaro of Holmdel, N.J.; five brothers, Vernon and Marie Hanken of Fremont, Neb., Roger and Diane Hanken of Van Horne, Orville and Germaine Hanken of Minneapolis, Minn., Gervase and Margaret Hanken of Fort Atkinson, and Alan Hanken of St. Cloud, Minn.; 16 nieces; 23 nephews; several great nieces and nephews; one aunt, Hildegard Beckman of Ossian; and one uncle, Frank Hanken of Rapid City, S.D.

Cyril Hanken was preceded in death by his parents; his first and second wives; one brother, Donald Hanken; and a sister-in-law, Irma Hanken.
