Theodore (Ted) Joseph Hemesath
Theodore (Ted) Joseph Hemesath, 88, of Ossian died Monday, April 17, 2000 at the Ossian Senior Hospice following a lengthy illness.
Funeral Mass was held Monday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. Officiating was The Rev. Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes and the Rev. James Heiar, S.V.D.
Organist at the service was Sister Carol Hemesath, O.S.F. Cantor was Lori Whittle and readers were Nancy Hemesath and Beth Moore. Gift carriers were Gerry Schulte, Stella Entsminger, and Kathy Verdon. Mass servers were family members.
Casket bearers were Herman Schulte, Norma Cahill, Fred Hemesath, Lois Rowan, Martha Kath, Phil Hemesath, Judy Gibbs, and Francis Wenthold.
Place of interment was St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian.
Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian is handling the arrangements.
Ted was born the son of Herman and Anna (Huber) Hemesath on April 17, 1912 in rural Ossian. He was baptized on April 18, 1912 and confirmed on May 20, 1926 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian. He obtained his education by attending De Sales School.
Ted began farming with his father. He resided and cared for his parents and sister, Emma, while on the family farm west of Ossian where his parents lived until their deaths. Emma died on March 22, 1998. Ted continued to live on the family farm until he moved to the Ossian Senior Hospice on December 15, 1999.
He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and its Rosary Society.
Ted played many games of softball in his younger years. He also spent many hours fishing and was an avid reader of books and newspapers.
He enjoyed listening to music, traveling and shop work, carpentry, and golfing. He enjoyed assisting others by doing odd jobs for them.
Ted was a past member of the Winneshiek County Farm Bureau and a longtime member of the South Winneshiek Gold and Country Club in Calmar.
Survivors include two brothers, Herman Hemesath and his wife, Helen, of Decorah, and Andrew Hemesath and his wife, Julie, of Calmar; three sisters, Pauline Schulte of Cedar Rapids, Sister Luke (Mary) Hemesath of Techny, IL., Helen and her husband Leo Elsbernd of Ossian; and a sister-in-law Virginia Hemesath of Norway, Iowa. Also surviving are 26 nieces and nephews.
Theodore Hemesath was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Anna Hemesath; a brother, Victor Hemesath; two sisters, Sister John (Frances) Hemesath and Emma Hemesath; and a brother-in-law, Matthew Schulte
