Leonard John Moellers

Leonard John Moellers, 82, of Ossian, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a short illness.

A funeral mass was held Monday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. Officiating were the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes, and the Revs. John Paisley, Robert Hirsch and Vincent Simon.

Michael Elsbernd was the organist. Soloist was Nichole Colsch. Kay Elsbernd was the reader.

Gift carriers were Lara Moellers; Angela, Katie, Alicia and Stefanie Brunkhorst, and Isabell Wahl.

Casket bearers were Richard Elsbernd, Jason DeWald, Joshua DeWald, Larry Moellers, Stan Moellers, James Moellers, Donald Hageman, Leonard Hageman, Jerry Herold, Ray Amber and Robert Moellers.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handled arrangements.

Leonard was born July 3, 1917, on the Moellers family farm west of Ossian, the son of Anton H. and Mary E. (Hemesath) Moellers.

He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He obtained his education at the De Sales School.

On Oct. 1, 1947, he was united in marriage with Marietta M. Remke at St. Francis de Sales Church by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M.J. Thiltgen. To this union four children were born.

Leonard was a lifetime member of St. Francis de Sales Church and its Rosary Society. He farmed the home farm. He served on the Board of Directors of Union Produce Cooperative, served on the Founding Board of the Ossian Senior Hospice, and served on the Ossian Community Betterment Association.

After retiring from farm work, he continued to live on the farm and enjoyed many years of woodworking. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and fishing. He also liked to share a cup of coffee with his many friends and relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Marietta; one son, Leonard J. Moellers Jr. of Marion; three daughters, Margaret and James Elsbernd of Ossian, Ann and Phillip Brunkhorst of Masonville and Jane and Carl Thoresen of Cedar Rapids; 12 grandchildren, Richard and wife Kay Elsbernd, and Michael Elsbernd and fiancee Nichole Colsch; Angela, Katie, Alicia and Stefanie Brunkhorst; Lara Moellers; Jason DeWald; Melissa and husband Brad Cowden; Joshua, and wife Kim, DeWald; Jazimen Caldwell and Isabell Wahl; and one great-granddaughter, Arielle DeWald.

Also surviving are a brother, William and Beatrice Moellers of Northbrook, IL.; one sister-in-law, Lucille Moellers of Ossian; and one brother-in-law, Gregory Remke of Ossian.

Leonard Moellers was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Jennifer Brunkhorst; a brother, Arnold Moellers; a sister and brother-in-law, Irma and Joseph G. Hageman; twin brother and sister in infancy; and another brother in infancy.
