Hayward James Evenrud

Hayward James Evenrud, 84, of rural Decorah, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 1, at 1:30 p.m., at Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Susan Debner officiating.

Casket bearers were Ray Kvamme, Roger Espe, Gary Smorstad, Lyle Mahoney, John Ottara and Dennis Ruen.

Interment was at the Glenwood West Cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.

Hayward was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County, rural Decorah, the son of Arthur Bernard and Olga Bergetta (Hill) Evenrud.

He was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church and attended the rural Rocksvold School.

On Oct. 5, 1940, he was married to Edith Lorraine Taylor at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Their children were Gary, Loren and Nancy.

Hayward lived his entire life on the century family farm. Like many farmers of his day, he spent long hours working with the land and he developed a fondness for raising livestock.

He was a lifelong member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and participated in several early building campaigns, including the stone parish hall addition.

Hayward also was active in the men's brotherhood and was a former Church Council member. He always looked forward to the annual lutefisk dinners and other events at the church.

After the death of his wife, Edith, Hayward remained on the family farm and in his retirement he enjoyed many visits from his family and his neighborhood friends.

Farm visitors cherished his wisdom and subtle humor. He always took time to visit over coffee and he thoroughly enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His wise counsel and practical view of the world will be missed.

Hayward taught by example that life is precious and that every day is a God-given gift.

Survivors include a son, Loren and Carole Evenrud of Cannon Falls, Minn.; a daughter, Nancy and Mark Winholtz of Andover, Minn.; six grandchildren, Kristin (Mikkel) Paulson of Decorah, Sarah (Jack) Kerbeshian of Golden Valley, Minn., Nelson Evenrud of St. Paul, Minn., and Wendy, Becky and Shannon Winholtz, all of Andover, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Frederick Paulson of Decorah and Nicolas Kerbeshian of Golden Valley, Minn.; and a nephew, Dennis Ruen and his daughters, Sarah, Landa, Breanna and Laura, all of Decorah.

Hayward Evenrud was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edith Lorraine; his infant son, Gary David; his sister, Aria Ruen; his brother-in-law, Henry Ruen; his niece, Donna Ruen; and his infant great-grandchild, Luke Kerbeshian.
