Charles M. Blong

Charles M. Blong, 69, of Fort Atkinson, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, with the Rev. Allen Schmitt officiating.

Burial with full military rites by the American Legion-V.F.W. will be at the St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be James Herold, David Bulgren, Paul Pavlovec, Joe Neuzil, Floyd Hackman and Joe Kruse.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, from 3-8 p.m., at the Chekal Funeral Home in Fort Atkinson. There will be a prayer service at 5 p.m. and a Foresters rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Charles was born Aug. 14, 1930, in St. Lucas, the son of Carl J. and Carolyn (Perry) Blong. He attended St. Luke's Catholic School in St. Lucas.

Charles served in the United States Navy for four years, aboard the U.S.S. Hailey-DD556.

On May 4, 1953, Charles married Mary Ann Pavlovec in Fort Atkinson.

He worked for Myers Brothers for 30 years, Holland Brothers for 12 years and for the past eight years at Roverud Construction.

Charles was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, a 50-year member of the Catholic Foresters, and a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion in Fort Atkinson.

He served for 22 years as mayor and a council person, and as a volunteer fireman for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Blong; two sons, Chuck and Jeanie Blong of Farmersburg and Jim and Eileen Blong of Calmar; six grandchildren: April, Kari, Mark, Nathan, Stephanie and Matthew; two greatgrandchildren: Breanna and Dillon; one sister, Margaret and Edward Schmitt of St. Lucas; four nephews: the Rev. Allen Schmitt, Edward Schmitt, Bob Blong and Mark Blong; and four nieces: Sister Diana Blong, Gloria Blong, Patty Cogburn and Debbie Malamet.

Charles Blong was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Mark and Flavian; and two nephews, Ron and David Blong.
