John Joseph Bohr

John Joseph Bohr, 97, died Thursday July 8, 1999, at the Ossian Senior Hospice.

A funeral mass was held Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating.

Al Sensor was the organist, with music by the St. Francis adult choir and by congregational singing.

His grandchildren were lectors. Offertory gifts were presented by his daughters.

Casket bearers were Arthur Bohr, Luke Bohr, Tony Schissel, Richard Bohr, Scott Bohr, John C. Bohr, LeRoy Bohr, Lester Hageman and Adam Bohr.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery. The Schmitz Funeral Home in Ossian handled arrangements.

John Joseph Bohr was born Feb. 28, 1902, in rural Ossian, the son of Herman and Agnes (Hemesath) Bohr.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and received an education by attending De Sales School.

On June 20, 1929, he was united in marriage to Anna Bertha Heying. The ceremony was performed at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church at Festina by the late Rev. Joseph Bohr.

The couple made their home on the family farm west of Ossian, where they raised 13 children. In 1968, they retired and moved into Ossian.

John was a member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He also served on the Ossian Senior Hospice Board and the board of Union Produce Co-operative.

He enjoyed his family and also telling stories about the area. John became a resident at the Ossian Senior Hospice Jan 26.

Survivors include four sons, Arthur Bohr of New Hampton, John C. and Sheila Bohr of Waterloo, Luke and Kathy Bohr of Decorah, and LeRoy and Shirley Bohr of Ossian; three daughters, Lucy and Tony Schissel of New Hampton, Sister Janet Bohr, O.S.F. of Petersburg, and Lois and Lester Hageman of Fort Atkinson; and three daughters-in-law, Marilyn Bohr of Ossian, Lorrena Bohr of Waucoma and Annette Bohr of Decorah.

Also surviving are 30 grandchildren, Ron Bohr of Riceville, Alan Bohr of New Hampton, LaVonne Ohm of New Hampton, Scott Bohr of Cedar Rapids, Randy Bohr of Ossian, Michael Bohr of Castalia, Bruce Bohr of Ossian, Michelle Breitsprecher of Castalia, Karla Numedahl of Ossian, Richard Bohr of Waucoma, Loras Schissel of Washington, D.C., Barbara Anderson of Waverly, Greg Schissel of New Hampton, Janice Tank of New Hampton, Ann Schissel of New Hampton, Jo Anne Averhoff of Cedar Rapids, Joe Bohr of Cedar Rapids, Jennifer Peterson of Decorah, Jeremy Bohr of Decorah, Jason Bohr of Cresco, Jeff Bohr of Spring Grove, Minn., Julie Buddenberg of Castalia, Kristie Bohr of Ossian, Kevin Bohr of Ossian, Jessica Bohr of Ossian, Mark Hageman of Calmar, Steven Hageman of Fort Atkinson, Kendra Kleve of Spillville, Adam Bohr of Ames and Rob Bohr of Cedar Falls.

Survivors include 47 great grandchildren and two sisters, Sister Marie Bohr, O.S.F., Dubuque and Rita Heying of Ionia.

John Joseph Bohr was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anna, who died March 25, 1999; three sons, Carl, Mark and Kenneth Bohr; three daughters, Clarita Bohr, Sister Norma Jean Bohr, O.S.F., and Luella Bohr, two daughters-in-law, Frances Bohr and Janice Bohr; six brothers, William, Anton, the Rev. Jerome Bohr, the Rev. Richard Bohr, Hugo and Clem; and four sisters, Rose Heying, Agnes Heying, Pauline Holthaus and Hilda Holthaus
