Herbert Meyer

Herbert Meyer, 63, of Ossian, died at his home Sunday, June 13, 1999, after a six-month illness.

Funeral services, with full military rites, were held Wednesday, June 16, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiating.

Al Sensor was the organist. Joan Schissel was the soloist. The congregation also sang hymns.

Aaron Hemesath was the cross bearer. Lectors were Amy O'Rourke and Mark Ney. Ushers were Dawn French, Tyler Hemesath and Tanya Hemesath.

Casket bearers were Tom Lentz, Layne Meyer, Steve Meyer, Daryl Helgerson, Troy Anderson, Travis Anderson, Freddie Scheidel and Pete Woodson.

Honorary bearers were David Buddenberg, Victor Halverson, Bill Buddenberg, Dennis Timp, Dave Breitsprecher and Kermit Oakland. In honorary attendance were members of the Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery, Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Visitation was held June 15, from 4-9 p.m. and again June 16, from 9 a.m. until service time. The Rev. Richard Kuhn, priest at St. Francis de Sales, led the prayer service.

Herbert Lloyd Meyer was born in Winneshiek County, in rural Ossian, March 3, 1936, the son of William P. and Charlotte (Hanson) Meyer. He was baptized April 9, 1936, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Eldorado. He was confirmed there April 2, 1950. He obtained his education by attending his neighborhood country school and graduated from West Union High School in 1953.

Herb served his country in the United States Army from April 24, 1956, until March 17, 1958. He held the rank of Private First Class and received an honorable discharge.

On Feb. 27, 1960, he was united in marriage with Kathryn Ann Wallmark at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church by the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Vemon Peters. To their union four children were born.

After their marriage, they farmed south of Ossian for eight years and then moved to a farm northeast of Ossian. They continued to farm for 20 additional years. In 1988 they moved to Ossian. Herb drove mail truck and also was a truck driver for Agriprocessors and Iowa Turkey Products Co., both of Postville. In 1992, he owned and operated the Penny Bar in Ossian. In recent years, he had been a self-employed semi-truck driver.

Herbie was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping. He was best known for his "laid-back" nature, his heart of gold and his great smile.

Survivors include his mother, Charlotte Meyer of West Union; his wife, Kathryn Ann; one son, Karl Meyer and wife Amy O'Rourke of Sheboygan Falls, Wis.; and three daughters, Diane and Jim Henning of Dubuque, Tracy and Dean Mashek of Ossian, and Denise and Mark Ney of Eldorado.

Nine grandchildren survive: Jessica and Travis Henning; Alanda, Erika and Devin Mashek; Hannah and Will Meyer; and Brady and Allison Ney.

Also surviving are one sister, Marlys and Kerwin Anderson of Calmar; three brothers, Kenneth and Eileen Meyer of West Union, Conley and Vickie Meyer of West Union and Duane Meyer of Eldorado; and other relatives and friends.

Herbert L. Meyer was preceded in death by his father, William P. Meyer, who died April 2, 1999.
