Genevieve Rothmeyer, 90, of Ossian, died Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a lingering illness.

A funeral mass was held Monday, June 14, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sale Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn as officiant.

Deb Scheidel was the organist. The St. Francis adult choir provided music. There also was congregational singing.

Lectors and prayer leaders were Sandy McPeak, Deanna Peckham, Mindy Schnuelle, Debi Weisbrod, Darcy Kanagy, Peggy Schnuelle, Kathy Hunt, Jan Rothmeyer, Susan Underwood and Brenda Rothmeyer.

Offertory gifts were taken by Kris Gilger, Pam Slavik, Becky Ortega, Stacy Loukota and Patty Nelson.

Altar servers were James Rothmeyer, Bobbi Jo Rothmeyer and Michelle Rothmeyer.

Casket bearers were Creighton Grady, Kevin Grady, Ricky Rothmeyer, Brian Rothmeyer, Mitchell Schnuelle, Danny Schnuelle, Steven Rothmeyer, Shawn Rothmeyer, Shane Rothmeyer and Joey Schnuelle.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Genevieve Mary (Gerleman) Rothmeyer was born Dec. 20 1908, in Dumas Texas, the daughter of Anton and Christine (Wiltgen) Gerleman. She was baptized there also.

As a baby, she and her family moved back to Iowa. She was raised in the Ossian area and was confirmed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Genevieve received her education at Francis de Sales School.

On Oct. 16, 1928, she was united in marriage with Frank Henry Rothmeyer at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church by the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. J. Thiltgen. To their union seven children were born.

During the first four years of their marriage, they farmed near Festina. Then they moved to rural Ossian, where they continued to farm until 1937. They moved into Ossian at that time and Frank gained employment with the Ossian Elevator.

Genevieve was a homemaker and was employed at the De Sales School cafeteria for several years.

She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, an honorary member of its Rosary Society; and a member of the Ossian Senior Citizens Club. Genevieve enjoyed her family, gardening and playing cards.

Survivors include three sons, Robert and Audrey Rothmeyer of Ossian, William "Bill" and Peggy Rothmeyer of Loveland, Colo., and Arthur Rothmeyer of Casper, Wyo.; two daughters, Irene "Pat" and John Grady of Omaha, Neb., and Elizabeth "Betty" and Eddie Schnuelle of Castalia; and a daughter-in-law, Harriet Rothmeyer of Gardena, Calif.

Twenty-five grandchildren survive: Sandy McPeak of Fontanelle, Kris Gilger of Phoenix, Ariz., Pam Slavik of Omaha, Neb., Becky Ortega of Cheyenne, Wyo., Creighton Grady of Omaha, Neb., Stacy Loukota of Omaha, Neb., Patty Nelson of Omaha, Kevin Grady of Omaha, Debi Weisbrod of Cylinder, Darcy Kanagy of Durango, Colo., Jan Rothmeyer of Newport, Wash., Susan Underwood of Fredericksburg, Brian Rothmeyer of Ossian, Kathy Hunt of Cedar Rapids, Brenda Rothmeyer of Decorah, Steven Rothmeyer of Des Moines, Mitchell Schnuelle of Castalia, Danny Schnuelle of Prior Lake, Minn., Peggy Schnuelle of Bloomington, Minn., Joey Schnuelle of Castalia, Mindy Schnuelle of Postville, Ricky Rothmeyer of Loveland, Colo., Deanna Peckham of Loveland, Colo., Shawn Rothmeyer of Casper, Wyo., and Shane Rothmeyer of Casper, Wyo.

Thirty-five great-great-grandchildren survive: Cody and Jacob France; Patrick, Dana and Lauren Gilger; Cole McClellan and Rachel Slavik; Chad and Amy Dunlay; Lindy, Colin and Jessica Grady; Dalton and Dusty Loukota; Kory, Lisa and Nikki Nelson; B. J. Weisbrod; Dustin Kanagy; Elizabeth, Matthew and Rebecca Murray; Jamie, Michelle, Bobbi Jo and Charlie Rothmeyer; Brianne and Kiley Hunt; Misty, Molly, Dustin and Joshua Schnuelle; Dominick Schnuelle; and Jesse and Emily Rothmeyer.

Other survivors include three great-great-grandchildren, Reg France, and Kylie and Shelby Weisbrod; a brother, Rudie Gerleman of Calmar; two sisters, Rose Rothmeyer of Festina, and Philomena and Edward Lis of Cedar Rapids; one brother-in-law, Greg "Bud" Rothmeyer of Festina; three sisters-in-law, Mary Kay Gerleman of Cedar Rapids, Evelyn Wenthold of Ossian, and Nora Jennings of Austin, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Genevieve Rothmeyer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank on July 21, 1984; a daughter, Jean Ann Rothmeyer in October of 1938; a son, James Rothmeyer in April of 1997; a great-grandson, Jesse France in September of 1990; and four brothers, Albert, Leo, Andrew and Gus Gerleman.
