Christine Marie "Chris" Kemna

Christine Marie "Chris" Kemna, 33, of Algona and formerly of Decorah, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Fairview Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

A Celebration of Life service was held Wednesday, June 20 at 1 p.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah with Rev. Gary Krapfl and Father Steven Brodersen officiating.

Organist Mary Beth Bouska provided music and soloists were Cindy Schissel, Jody Niess, Laurie Gisleson, Julie Vulk, Steve Casterton and Joan Bernado.

Casket bearers were Rick Freeburg, Pat Selden, Blaine Whalen, Shaun Wolf, Todd Ihde, Steve Voigt, Joseph Whalen and Jeff Wood.

Honorary casket bearers were Sheila Carolan, Sue Stammer, Ann Sheeley, Michelle Hess, Lisa Reichter, Carrie Smith, Kari Staack, Chris Bernhard, Mark Carolan, Steve Kemna, Brian Snitker, Jeff Carolan, Pat Dooey, Ron Reichter and Mark Stork.

Interment was in St. Benedict's Catholic Cemetery in Decorah. French & Balik Funeral Home of Decorah was in charge of arrangements, with Geilenfeld-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in charge of arrangements in Algona.

Christine Marie "Chris" Kemna was born June 29, 1967 in Decorah, the daughter of Greg and Rosella (Whalen) Carolan.

She grew up in Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School in 1986.

She graduated from Waldorf College, Forest City, and then obtained her teaching degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, in 1991.

She married Tom Kemna June 13, 1992 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, and was currently teaching at Algona Alternative School.

Chris Kemna loved walking and playing with her dog, Bailey. She enjoyed shopping, bike riding and being with friends.

She was involved in several community organizations and especially enjoyed her time working on Relay for Life.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Kemna of Algona; her parents, Greg and Rosella Carolan of Decorah; two brothers, Jeff (Sheila) Carolan and Mark Carolan, all of Decorah; her paternal grandmother, Agnes Carolan of Canton, Minn.; her maternal grandfather, Joe Whalen of Harmony, Minn.; her mother-in-law Marie Kemna of Bancroft; one brother-in-law Steve Kemna of Bloomington, Minn.; four sisters-in-law, Diana Wolf of Remsen, Jan Thorn of Roswell Ga., Julie Becker of Jacksonville, Fla. and Lisa Reichter of Goldfield; nine nieces and nephews; seven godchildren and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Christine Marie "Chris" Kemna was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Edward Carolan; her maternal grandmother, Doris Whalen; her father-in-law, Lawrence Kemna; a sister-in-law, Deb Kemna and one uncle, Phillip Whalen.

Funeral services for Christine “Chris” Carolan Kemna of Algona, formerly of Decorah, will be held at 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 20 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. Rev. Gary Krapfl. will officiate. French and Balik Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Christina, 33, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at Fairview Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN following a lenghty{sic} illness.
