Herman P. Hemesath

Herman P. Hemesath, 92, of Decorah, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home following a lengthy illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Joan Schissel was the cantor. Andy Frankhouse was the saxophonist. Hymns were "All Creatures of Our God & King", "Precious Lord", "On Eagle's Wings" and "How Great Thou Art".

Mass servers were Ross Payne and Mitch and Adam Hemesath. Karla Hemesath was the lector. Mary Payne gave a special reading.

Gift bearers were Matt, Michael and Daniel Hemesath. Ushers were Roger and Gladys Elsbernd.

Casket bearers were Bob, Tim, Brad, Keith, Tom, Ron and Mike Hemesath and Greg Spielbauer.

Interment was at the church cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Herman P. Hemesath was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Ossian, the son of Herman F. and Anna (Huber) Hemesath. He attended De Sales Catholic School.

On Jan. 26, 1932, he was united in marriage with Helen Tieskoetter at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Herman farmed near Ossian, later moving near Calmar in 1935.

They then moved to Decorah in 1968, where he farmed until he retired in 1984.

Herman enjoyed fishing, baseball, traveling and playing cards. He was a member of St. Benedict's Church and the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Hemesath of Decorah; three sons, Joe and Alice Hemesath of Decorah, Norbert and Suzanne Hemesath of Cedar Rapids, and Fred and Fran Hemesath of Ossian; two daughters, Rosemary and Grady Whitehorne of Richmond, Va., and Eleanor and Larry Spielbauer of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Andrew Hemesath of Calmar; two sisters, Helen and Leo Elsbernd of Ossian and Sister Luke Hemesath, S.Sp.S., of Techny, Illinois; 18 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Herman Hemesath was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Victor and Ted Hemesath; and three sisters, Sister John Hemesath, S.Sp.S., Emma Hemesath and Pauline Schulte.
