Paul William "Billy" Hayes
Paul William "Billy" Hayes, 71, of Decorah, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at his home after three years with cancer.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.
Alan Sensor will be the organist. Joan Schissel will be the cantor.
There will be full military honors by the Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977 and Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163.
Burial will be at the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery in Decorah, Iowa. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
There is no visitation as the body was cremated.
Paul Hayes was born May 21, 1929, in Burr Oak Township, Winneshiek County, the fifth of eight children of Rose T. (Mailey) and Francis H. Hayes. He attended Decorah Schools.
Paul was married to Verna B. Dodge Oct. 10, 1951, in Two Harbors, Minn.
He served during the Korean conflict from 1951-1953, stationed in Germany. He was in the United States Army 28th Division Infantry F. Company.
Paul lived in Chicago for seven years, where he worked as a high rise iron worker/welder. After moving back to Decorah, he worked for 27 years at Deco Products as a foreman, until his retirement.
Paul was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Verna; five children, Michael P. Hayes of Stites, Idaho, Linda J. Gjere of Decorah, Laura A. Hayes of Shellsburg, Lanea M. Avila of West Union and Patrick L. Hayes of Hesper, 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
Also surviving are five brothers, Leo and Leonard Hayes of Cedar Rapids, Emmett Hayes of Galveston, Texas, Gene Hayes of Lebanon, Mo., and Dale Hayes of Decorah; and two sister, Frances Carlson and Rosemary Ingram, both of Lebanon, Mo.
Paul Hayes was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Misty M. Hayes.
