Neal Louis Sloan
Neal Sloan, 73, of Decorah, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home following a short illness.
A funeral mass was held Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m., at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg and the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.
The lector was Sister Brian Kelly. A family tribute was given by Bob Larson.
Music was provided by organist and pianist Tim and Sandra Peters, violinist Anna Evenson and trumpeter Laura Chesher. Hymns were "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", "Be Not Afraid", "Prayer of St. Francis", "How Great Thou Art", and
"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling".Casket bearers were Joe Keefe, Dick Trytten, Wayne Thomas, Joe Bouska, Jack Nelson and Gerard "Bud" Noonan.
Honorary bearers were the Decorah State Bank Retiree Coffee Club, Winneshiek County Physical Therapy Association Board members, Bob and Barbara Buckton and Bob and Rosie Jewell.
Military rites were by the Helof-Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977. Interment was at the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Neal Louis Sloan was born Dec. 28, 1926, in St. Lucas, the son of Louis and Theresa (Schmitt) Sloan. He attended and graduated from St. Luke's High School in 1943.
He then served in the United States Army in Korea. Neal attended Loras College in Dubuque.
He married Joan McDonald Sept. 19, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville.
Neal worked for the Leath Furniture Co. in Dubuque, and with the Interstate Finance Co. in Dubuque until 1957, when he was transferred to Decorah to open a new branch.
In 1967, he went to work for Decorah State Bank as a loan officer, retiring Jan. 2, 1992.
Neal enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He enjoyed traveling, yard work and feeding the birds.
He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, a board member of the Winneshiek County Physical Therapy Association, Oneota Golf Course, Elks Lodge, V.F.W. and the Sunrise and Good Neighbors Clubs at the banks.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; seven children, Pat and Larry Welo of Mt. Horeb, Wis., Dianne and Don Frazer of Oelwein, Mary and Tom Edwards of Anchorage, Alaska, Michael and Roberta Sloan of Rochester, Minn., Julie and Craig Anderson of Decorah, Jean and Dave Wise of Decorah, and David and Elizabeth Sloan of Ankeny.
There are 14 grandchildren: Aaron, Evan and Claire Welo; Shae and Will Frazer; Joanna Edwards; Tyler and Colin Sloan; Kara, Nate and Brinn Anderson; Ethan and Jared Wise; and Laura Sloan.
Other survivors include two sisters, Irene and Neal West of Des Moines, and Dorothy and Arthur Schultz of Urbandale; three brothers, Donald and Kay Sloan of Dubuque, Gerald and Marleen Sloan of Ponca City, Okla., and Floyd and Joan Sloan of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters-in-laws, Elaine Sloan of Waverly and Pam Sloan of Minneapolis, Minn.; one brother-in-law, Jack Holverson of DeWitt; one aunt, Sister Mary Germain Schmitt, O.S.F., Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.
Neal Sloan was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Thomas; a brother in infancy, Robert; and one sister, Barbara Holverson.
