Lucy Marie Drew

Lucy Marie Drew, 90, of Decorah, died Monday, May 1, 2000, at the Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

A funeral mass was held Friday, May 5, at 11 a.m., at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Joan Schissel was the cantor. Hyman's were "Be Not Afraid", "Hail Mary Gentle Woman", "One Bread, One Body",
"Prayer of St. Francis", "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling".

Placing the pall on the casket were Mike and Joan Mitchell, Loretta Brown, Merle Mitchell and Mary Dvorak. Eucharistic ministers were Loretta Brown and Sharon Heying.

Jim Mitchell was the lector. Merle Mitchell and Mary Dvorak were gift bearers.

Casket bearers were John Lubke, Terry Dvorak, David Mitchell, Tom Mitchell, Steve Dvorak and Craig Ellingson.

Interment was at the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, Decorah. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

The Catholic Daughters of America read a rosary Thursday, May 4, at French & Balik's, followed by a scripture service given by Sister Brian.

Lucy Drew was born June 25, 1909, the daughter of Michael and Mary Jane (Sexton) Drew. She was born on a farm near Decorah which she greatly enjoyed and lived on all her life.

She attended Madison Township Schools, Decorah High School and the Gates Business College in Waterloo. Lucy was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of America and the Farm Bureau.

Her entire life was spent helping her brother farm and care for her parents and siblings. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and especially the companionship of her dog, Mugsy.

Lucy spent the last eight months of her life at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Elma before being admitted to Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Parnell and Lois McCabe of St. Paul, Minn., Bernice Kurysh of St. Paul, Minn., Mary Dvorak of Elma, Merle Mitchell of Cresco, Loretta Brown of Charles City, Mike and Joan Mitchell of Elma, and Paul Bouska of Canton, Minn.; many great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great nephew.

Lucy Drew was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Mary Jane Drew; five sisters, Catherine Drew of Decorah, Genevieve McCabe of St. Paul, Minn., Grace Buoska of Canton, Minn., Bea Drew of Decorah and Loretta Mitchell of Lime Springs; and three brothers, William Drew of Ridgeway, Francis Drew of Decorah and Thomas Drew, who died in infancy.
