Death of a Former Citizen

The following obituary of Mr. Chas. McManus, taken from the Ossian, (Ia.) Bee, was handed to us for re-publication. As Mr. McManus was well known to many of our citizens we give it space.

Mr. Chas. McManus, one of the oldest settlers of Winneshiek county, Bloomfield township, died at his home Saturday, January 9, 1904, his demise being due to heart disease which troubled him for some time. Some time ago he became very sick, suffering from a similar attack, from which, however, he recovered, and apparently enjoyed his usual good health.

Mr. McManus was born in the county of Fennanagh, Ireland, January 5, 1828, and when 21 years of age emigrated to America, settling in Benton, Lafayette Co., WIs., where on March 7, 1859, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Ann Mulligan. To this union twelve children were born, six son and six daughters, three of whom preceded hom to the grave, Teresa, Matilda and Maggie. Shortly after his marriage he, with his wife removed to Winneshiek county where he has since resided. His wife and nine children are left to mourn his departure: Mrs. Thomas Wiley, Edgewood, Iowa; James McManus, Plainview, Minn; J. J. McManus, Ossian; Charley, Henry, William, Mayme, Edward and Ruth, the six last named remaining at home.

The deceased was a devout and practical Catholic, lived up to the requirements of the Catholic Church, and died fortified by its last rites and sacrements. In the pioneer days, when Ossian was yet without a church, he and his family frequently drove to Festina, in a cart drawn by oxen, to attend divine services. He prided himself in being Catholic, a democrat and an Irishman. He was zealous in behalf of his faith consistent and conservative in politics, and loyal to his native land - loyal to his adopted country, America. He was a well-read man, being well posted in religious, political and social affairs of this country. By dint of hard labor and careful economy he acquired considerable property, leaving his family in good financial circumstances.

The funeral occurred Monday from St. Frances de Sales Catholic church and Rev. Father Lechtenberg, who officiated, spoke briefly of the dead man and lent his power to console the bereaved relatives and friends. His remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends who wished to pay their last tributes of respect to him who in life was to them a noble example of manhood. The pall bearers were M. J. Dolan, James Floody, Patrick Finnegan, M. Fitzpatrick, Larry Carlin and F. W. Dessel.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were J. J. and P. Rooney, of Asbury, Ia., Mrs. T. Finnegan of Bixby, Minn., Sam Swift, of Dubuque, Mrs. Herman Grotkin of Benton, Lafayette Co., WIs., and T. J. Wiley of Edgewood, Iowa, and T. J. Carrol of Owatona, Minn.
