Lucille Carolan

Lucille Carolan, 91, of Decorah, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Mary Beth Bouska was the organist. Joan Schissel was the cantor.

Casket bearers were Norb Bohr, Jim Beckman, Eric Wikan, Dave Sorum, Wayne Wicks and Bob Bjerke.

Honorary bearers were Bob Dotseth, Joe Hemesath, Ray Rovang, Duane Snyder and Norman Wheeler and Lester Engen.

Interment was at the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery. The French & Balik Funeral home handled arrangements.

Lucille (Anderson) Carolan was born April 10, 1908, near Canton, Minn., the daughter of Ole and Anna (McCabe) Anderson of Cresco. Lucille attended Assumption High School in Cresco and graduated from Our Lady of Angels Academy in Clinton June 3, 1927.

Lucille then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught school in Winneshiek County.

She married Robert P. Carolan at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco May 18, 1936. They farmed near Frankville until 1985 when they moved to Decorah.

Lucille had resided at the Barthell Eastern Star Home since 1997. She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include one daughter, Martha and Robert Thompson of West Chester, Pa.; one son, Robert F. and Meg Carolan of Mendota Heights, Minn.; four grandchildren, Moiya Thompson, and Paul, Mark and Eric Carolan; three sisters, Teresa and George Vachta of Cresco, Gertrude Bigalk of Cresco and Agnes Beckman of Harmony, Minn.; one brother-in-law, John Carolan of Caledonia, Minn.; and close friend, Ann and Harold Aschim of Decorah.

Lucille Carolan was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Anna Anderson; her husband, Robert P. Carolan, who died Dec. 18, 1999; six brothers, Clarence, Gregory, Francis, Leo, Garnett and Orville Anderson; and one granddaughter, Andrea Thompson of West Chester, Pa.
