Betty Mae Paskach

Betty Mae Paskach, 70, of Decorah, died Nov. 16, 1998, at her home of cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

Visitation will be at Fjelstuhl Funeral Home, 306 East Water Street, Decorah, Thursday, Nov. 19, from 4 until 8 p.m, with the rosary at 7 p.m.

A 22 year resident of Decorah, she was born Betty Ramsbottom, Jan. 22, 1928, in Creston. She also lived in Idaho and Omaha, Neb., in her childhood years.

After graduating from high school in Omaha, she was employed in the accounting department at Baum Iron Company.

Betty married Howard Paskach nearly 50 years ago in June of 1949, in Omaha. Their family moved to Manchester in 1955 and over the next 20 years also lived in Dyersville and Cresco; Rochester, Minn.; and Spencer before moving to Decorah in 1976.

Betty was very active in church activities in all of the communities where her family lived. Most recently, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Circle at St. Benedict Parish.

In Spencer, Betty served as a neighborhood chairman of the Girl Scouts and was a member of the League of Women Voters. A passionate gardener, she was also a member of the Decorah Town and Country Garden Club, helped to host garden shows, and carefully tended the flowers and gardens surrounding her home.

A dedicated community volunteer, Betty also was a member of the Decorah chapter of AARP. She was committed to the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, where she served on the volunteer committee that compiled and published the "Rosmaler's Recipes" cookbook to raise funds for the museum.

Betty was devoted to her husband and their family of nine children. She was a champion of higher education and was proud that all of her children attended college, two graduating from Luther College, six from Iowa State University and one from University of Illinois School of Law.

An enthusiastic traveler, Betty and her husband traveled to England and Ireland to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. They recently attended a weeklong Elder Hostel in Rhode Island. They also traveled from coast to coast to explore different parts of the country and visit their children.

Betty is survived by her husband, Howard B. Paskach, and her children: Janet, her husband Mark Giere, and their children, Kristen and Steven of Longwood, Fla.; Christopher, his wife, Darlene, and their son Brendan of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Stephen, his wife, Denise, and their children Christopher, Kelly, and Claire of Plymouth, Minn.; David, his wife, Kyong-Ae, and their children, Evan, Sean, Joseph, and Jeffrey of Cottonwood, Minn.; Gail, her husband, Mark Boschult, and their children, Benjamin, Grant, and Daniel, of Elkhorn, Neb.; Carol, her husband, Tom Bockhaus, and their children, Kathryn, Abigail, Jonathan and Lauren, of Cumming; Richard, his wife, Julianne, and their son, Dmitri, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; Ronald, his wife, Lisa, and their children, Sarah and Zachary, of Des Moines; and Thomas Jay, his wife, Jeanne, and their daughter, Dagney, of Ames.
