Orville Carlton Winger

Orville Winger, 75, of Decorah, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating.

Irmgard Ellingson was the organist. Soloist Susan Druck sang "Beautiful Savior" and "The Lord's Prayer". The Silver Memories also provided special music. The congregation sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art".

Casket bearers were Dr. B. E. Vagts, George Peck, Jim Burnside, Kenneth Mestad, Brad Brockman, Greg Remke, Mike Biedenfeld and Victor Halverson.

In honorary attendance were the V.F.W. of Decorah, the DAV of Decorah and Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503.

Interment was at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, rural Decorah. The Schmitz Funeral Home of Ossian handled arrangements.

Orville Carlton Winger was born Feb. 19, 1923, at Decorah, the son of Oscar and Clara (Bentley) Winger. He was baptized March 18, 1923, by the Rev. I. B. Torreson and confirmed May 30, 1937 by the Rev. T. A. Hoff at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

He lived in Prosper, Minn., from 1925-30 and the returned to Decorah, graduating from Decorah High School in 1940.

Orville worked at Lockheed Vega Aircraft in California in 1942 and entered the United States Air Force Feb. 4, 1943, serving in the 769th Bob Squadron/20th Air Force. He was awarded the following: Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with six bronze stars, American Theatre Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was discharged Nov. 14, 1945, at Sioux City Army Air Base as a Staff Sergeant.

On June 27, 1948, he was united in marriage with Agnes Aschim at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by the Rev. Oscar E. Ingebretson. To this union three daughters were born.

Orville was manager of the Oneota Bowling Lanes for five years after attending Luther College for two years. On Aug. 20, 1951, he was employed by the Ossian State Bank and became executive vice president in 1959, serving in that capacity until his retirement Feb. 1, 1988. He was employed at the bank for over 37 years.

The family moved to Ossian Nov. 1, 1951, and he became a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church. Orville was active in various duties there. He served on the Church Council various times, was a Sunday School teacher and was head usher. He was a Boy Scout leader and a member of Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503 in Ossian, where he was service officer for many years.

Orville also was a member of the V.F.W. Post in Decorah, the South Winn Country Club, the D.O.T. Right-of-Way Board, Winneshiek County Compensation Board and the Winneshiek County Bankers' Association.

At the time of his death, Orville was on the Board of Directors at the Ossian State Bank and the Iowa State Bank in Calmar.

Orville enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes, bowling, playing whist, golfing, his family, his grandchildren and friends, as well as contacts with customers and staff at Ossian State Bank.

In April of 1997, he and Aggie moved back to Decorah.

Survivors include his wife, Aggie; three daughters, Linda and Steve Daubenmier of Waukesha, Wis., Mary Winger of Austin, Texas, and Beth and Todd McDonough of Decorah; five granddaughters, Heather and Alison Daubenmier, and Megan, Molly and Maria McDonough; a brother, Oscar K. Winger of Decorah, and a sister-in-law, Dorisgene Winger. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews, Bill, Karen, Kathy, Becky, Carla, Rachel, Martha, Ian, Linda and Lynnferd.

Orville Winger was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lloyd, Stanley and Edward Winger.
