Mavis R. Proehl

Mavis R. Proehl, 73, of La Crosse, Wis. died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at the Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 23, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in La Crosse, with the Rev. Duane Kamrath officiating.

Elizabeth Kjos was the organist. Larry Vongroven was the soloist on "How Great Thou Art." Other hymns were "0 Savior, Precious' Savior," "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me," "Beautiful Savior" and "My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less."

Casket bearers were Gary, David, Jeffrey and Kyle Proehl, Scott Welsh and Ron Wikan.

Burial was at the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Mavis R. (Halvorson) Proehl was born in Decorah Feb. 25, 1927, the daughter of Roy and Mae (Sletten) Halvorson. She was baptized into the Christian faith April 24, 1920 and confirmed July 13, 1941, both at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church north of Decorah.

She married Otto Proehl at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church Aug. 14, 1949. Mavis worked a registered nurse for many years and later had worked as office manager for Proehl's Appliance Store until her retirement.

She cared deeply for St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was instrumental in making several of their banners.

Survivors include her husband, Otto; one daughter, Susan and Mike Welsh of La Crosse, Wis.; three sons, Gary and Elizabeth Proehl of Windham, N.H., Dave and Pat Proehl of Lakeville, Minn.; and Jeff and Jean Proehl of Cornish, N.H.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia and Arlin Hansen of Decorah; and one brother, Roger Halverson, also of Decorah.

Mavis Proehl was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Marilynn; and another sister, Sonja.
