Helen Bauder Carlson was born Dec. 28, 1907, the daughter of Oscar and Anna Katherine Evenson Bauder of Decorah.

Her family were members of First Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed.

She was a 1925 graduate of Decorah High School and a 1929 graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., with a Classics major.

On Oct. 26, 1929, she was united in marriage with Roy E. Carlson at First Lutheran Church. Three children were born to this union: Astrid "Ozzie", R. Eric and David.

In their 62 years of marriage, Helen and Roy Carlson shared their love of travel, the arts, their time together with family and friends and the wonderful companionship they found in one another.

Helen Carlson's roots in the community were deep and abiding. She served three elected terms on the Decorah School Board, was president of the Girl Scout Council, and was an active volunteer with the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Luther College Woman's Club and the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

In 1992, Helen Carlson received the Distinguished Service Award from Luther College.

Her family and friends can attest to her flexible mind, her healthy sense of humor, her passion for the theatre, her international curiosity, her enjoyment of music, her delight in a good book, and her nurturing and compassionate love of family.
