Edna J. Berge

Edna Berge, 84, of Decorah, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah.

Visitation will be Friday from 4-6 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home and on Saturday after 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 10 at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Marion Miller officiating.

Music selections include "Beautiful Savior," "Amazing Grace" and "Lift High the Cross."

Pallbearers are Greg Berge, William Brown, Roy Macal, Alex McDowell, Lyle Sacquitne and Robert Usgaard.

Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery, with Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.

Edna J. Berge was born March 19, 1916 in Kendalville, the daughter of Albin and Julia (Anderson) Nelson.

She was baptized, confirmed and married at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

She was raised in Decorah and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1934.

After graduation, Edna Berge taught at a country school east of Ossian and in the Washington Prairie area. She also taught Sunday School at First Lutheran Church and was active in circle and in the church women's group. She enjoyed playing cards, painting and travel.

On June 15, 1940, she was married to P. Norman Berge at First Lutheran Parsonage by Rev. T. A. Hoff.

Survivors include her husband, Norman Berge; one son, Darrell and Beth Berge of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; three daughters: Eileen (David) Hanson of Newtown, Conn.; Janelle Spain of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and Marilyn (Frank) McDowell of Worthington, Minn; seven grandchildren and one brother, Richard (Joy) Nelson of Waterloo.

Edna J. Berge was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers: Alton, Guy, Truman, Vernon and Joseph Nelson and three sisters: Effie Austad, Irene Losey and Verna Yerkes.
