LeRoy Joseph Mettille

LeRoy Mettille, 77, of rural Waterville, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m., at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church in rural Harpers Ferry, with the Revs. Bernard Grady and Louis Trzil officiating.

Casket bearers were Jim Mettille, Ralph Mettille, Allan Grady, Donald McCormick, LeRoy Buttcher and James Egan.

Burial was at the church cemetery. The Martin Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.

LeRoy Joseph Mettille was born Jan. 12, 1922, on the rural Harpers Ferry farm of his parents, John and Mary (McCormick) Mettille.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Pius at Cherry Mound Catholic Church and attended the rural "Egan" school.

On May 14, 1946, he married Mary Kathleen Finnegan at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McGregor. They farmed together in rural Waterville on the family Century Farm. He milked and raised crops, as well as hogs and beef, until his retirement in 1983.

LeRoy enjoyed the farm life, tending carefully to his livestock and taking particular care of his machinery, equipment and tools. He also enjoyed dancing, fishing, going out to eat and spending time with his family and friends, as well as chauffeuring Kathleen around the countryside.

He was a member of St. Pius of Cherry Mound Rosary Society and the Waterville Senior Citizens. LeRoy was a former 4-H leader.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; two sons, John and Leona Mettille of Caldwell, Idaho, and Butch and Debbie Mettille of North Pole, Alaska; three daughters, Linda Mettille of Waterville, Pat and John Moore of Decorah, and Deb and Tony Schulte of Spring Grove, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Charles and Theresa Mettille, and Edward and Lil Mettille, of Baltimore, Md.

LeRoy Mettille was preceded in death by his parents.
