Martin W. Winkie

Martin W. Winkie, 91, of Decorah, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at the Aase Haugen home in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church with the Revs. Tim Tostengard, James Glesne and Ole Winter officiating.

Diane Kvamme was the organist. The congregation sang "How Great Thou Art" , "Savior, Again to Your Dear Name" and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives".

Casket bearers were John Boehm, Norman Dickman, Ronald Jahnke, Richard Stuckman, Roy Teetshorn and Ronald L. Winkie.

Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery. The FjelstuI Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Martin was born April 25, 1908, in Ludlow Township, Allamakee County, the son of Henry and Emily (Menke) Winkie. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Reformed Church.

He attended rural schools in Ludlow Township and graduated from Waukon High School in 1926.

On Dec. 15, 1932, Martin was married to Ruth Klepper at her parent's home near Waukon.

After high school graduation, Martin worked at the Ludlow Creamery.

The couple opened a grocery store, Winkie's Clover Farm, in Decorah in 1933. They operated it for 25 years.

Then they bought the Cremee Freeze Drive Inn in Decorah and ran it for eight years. It is the business now called the Whippy Dip.

Martin's hobbies and interests included flowers, gardening and yard work, and he was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.

He was an active member of Decorah Lutheran Church and also belonged to the Elks Club.

Survivors include his son, Darrell (Jolayne) Winkie of Decorah; and two grandchildren, Kimberly Winkie of Orlando, Fla. and David (April) Winkie of Cresco.

Martin Winkie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ruth, who died Dec. 25, 1993; three brothers, John, Clarence and Albert; and one sister, Alta Stuckman.
