Clifford Westby

Clifford Gustav Westby, 88, of Decorah, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 15, at 11 a.m., at the Fjelstul Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Glesne officiating.

Diane Kvamme was the organist. The congregation sang "Amazing Grace," "Rock of Ages" and "Beautiful Savior."

Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Clifford was born April 3, 1911, in Madison, S.D., son of Julius and Sophia (Nilsalaken) Westby. He was baptized April 15, 1911, at Lake Park Lutheran Church in Madison, S.D., and confirmed April 26, 1925, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Clifford graduated from Decorah High School in 1929.

He was married to Edna Ellingson Nov. 25, 1935, at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. T. A. Hoff.

In 1942 he became a civilian employee of the United States Navel Air and served in Seattle, Wash., Pensacola, Fla., and Alameda, Calif., where he retired after 30 years of federal service.

When he was transferred to Alameda, he and Edna became members of Central Lutheran Church of Oakland, Calif. He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church. Clifford had been a resident of Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home since Feb. 19,1996.

Survivors include his wife Edna; one brother, Robert of Ulen, Minn.; and one sister, Cora Waller of Ulen, Minn.
