Rose Oyen

Rose Oyen, 81, of Decorah, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 17, at 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust, with the Rev. Bernie Oebser, interim pastor, officiating.

Jennifer Little was the organist. The congregation sang "Abide with Me," "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Rock of Ages."

Casket bearers were Alcurtis Borsheim, Gerald Borsheim, Kenneth Borsheim, Rick Langland, Daryl Moen and Larry Moen.

Burial was at the Locus Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Rose (Moen) Oyen was born May 7, 1918, in Allamakee County, the second of five children born to Paul and Charlotte (Blegen) Moen.

She was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church and educated in the country schools of Allamakee County.

As a young woman, Rose helped with housework for various families in the Glenwood area. She was active in the Luther League in Glenwood Church.

On Feb. 19, 1939, Rose married Burton Oyen at Glenwood Church

They moved to the Ruffridge farm just north of Locust, where Burton and his brother, Sherman, farmed for 21 years.

Burton and Rose joined St. John's Lutheran Church at Locust, where they remained faithful members even after they could no longer attend services. Rose was active in the church circle and Ladies Aid.

On March 11, 1945, Rose and Burton had a son, Duane.

In 1960, the couple moved to the Lurose farm one mile north of the Ruffridge farm and they lived there until 1990, when they moved to 307 East Broadway in Decorah.

In the early 1960s Rose was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. During a lifetime struggle with it, Rose maintained an optimistic outlook and did not complain about her condition. In the 1990s she was diagnosed with leukemia.

Survivors include her son, Duane of Eau Claire, Wis.; her sisters-in-law Corrine Thingvold and Esther Moen of Decorah, and Myrtle Moen of Waukon; brother-in-law Sherman Oyen; and several nieces.

Rose Oyen was preceded in death by her husband, Burton; her parents; her brothers Emmons, Curtis and Austin; and daughter-in-law Lynne Oyen

Rose is survived by her son Duane; (Submitter’s Note: Sister Doris & Roger Darrington), her sisters-in-law Corrine Thingvold and Esther Moen of Decorah and Myrtle Moen of Waukon; brother-in-law Sherman Oyen and several nieces and nephews.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband; Burton, her parents and brothers Emmons, Curtis and Austin and her daughter-in-law Lynne Oyen.
