Arla Snitker
Arla Snitker, 64, of Decorah, died April 2, 2001 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church with the Rev's Ole Winter, James Glesne and Bryan Robertson officiating.
Music was provided by organist Paul Bruvold and soloist Rev. Arndt Braaten sang "The Lord's Prayer." Congregational hymns were
"How Great Thou Art," "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer."Casket bearers were Don Rude, Bob Snell, Dewayne Rude, Ron Rude, Jason Moen, Larry Mestad and John Hjelmeland.
Interment was at Washington Prairie Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah, with French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.
Arla Harriet Snitker was born Sept. 22, 1936 in rural Decorah to Norman and Cora (Rude) Moen.
She was baptized and confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church and graduated from Decorah High School in 1956.
On Dec. 16, 1956 she was joined in marriage to Charles Snitker at Glenwood Lutheran Church.
They farmed for six years in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties before moving to Decorah in 1963.
While residing in Decorah, Arla Snitker worked for a short period of time at Henning's Grocery Store, before serving countless others at Aase Haugen Nursing Home, the Winneshiek County Hospital and the Eastern Star Nursing Home.
In 1979, Arla Snitker began working as a cook and then a matron at Decorah High School. She held the position for 18 years, until health issues led to her retirement in 1997.
While enjoying the company of her co-workers at the high school, Arla Snitker also found happiness in the friendships she made with many of the students there.
The heartfelt joy of service however, was clearly evident to all while preparing for and teaching the love of Jesus Christ in Sunday School classes, a post she held for over three decades.
She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother who cared deeply for her family. She was described in the 1956 Decorah High School yearbook as having a "welcome smile for all."
Survivors include her husband, Charles Snitker of Decorah; a son, Michael and Linda Snitker of Gurnee, IL; a daughter, Sandra and John Motzko of Highland, Park, IL; two grandchildren; her father, Norman Moen, Sr., of Decorah; a brother, Norman Moen, Jr., and Linda Moen of Decorah; a sister-in-law, Lorraine and Al Fiksdal of Rochester, Minn.; a mother-in-law, Clarice Snitker of Mabel, Minn.; aunts Arlene Moen, Helen Borseth, Gladys Rude and Norma and Kermit Mestad, all of Decorah; an uncle, Curt and Martha Rude of Decorah, and a very special friend, Ileen Wedo of Decorah.
Arla Harriet Snitker was preceded in death by her mother, Cora Moen.

Funeral services for Arla Snilker of Decorah were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6 at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah. The Rev. Ole Winter officiated. Interment was in the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah. French and Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
