Fred J. Lubke

Fred Lubke, 90, of Ridgeway, died Sunday, April 5, 2001 at home.

Funeral services were Monday, April 9 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with Rev. Jim Dale officiating.

Casket bearers were Jon Lubke, Benjamin Sigmund, Richard Vieyra, Gerald Bakken, Mark Faldet and Mark Steine.

Organist was Rev. Kristen Kvamme. Soloist Susan Micklick sang "In the Garden", and soloist Rebecca Steines sang "His Eye is on the Sparrow". The congregation sang "Amazing Grace".

Burial was in Lutheran Cemetery, with Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah in charge of arrangements.

Fred J. Lubke was born May 29, 1910 to Henry and Sena (Vick) Lubke, at the Brewery Farm west of Decorah at the end of Dug Road.

He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School and married Alice Baker Dec. 29, 1939 at the Methodist Church in Decorah. Two sons were born to them, John and Alan.

Fred Lubke started farming in Decorah Township on his grandpa Lubke's farm until 1944, when they moved to their present farm near Ridgeway.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Decorah and served on the Administrative Board of Trustees.

Fred Lubke's chief hobby was fiddling, which he began early in life. He and his wife, Alice entertained for several years in rest homes and on other occasions in the Decorah and Cresco area.

He loved the land, and believed if you take good care of the land, it would take good care of you.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Lubke of Ridgeway; a son, John H. and Joan Lubke of Ridgeway; two grandchildren, Jon and Kim Lubke and Julie and Ben Sigmund and three great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include a sister, Irene and Darrel Olson of Decorah; a brother, Roger Lubke of Oakland, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Lubke of Decorah and Eve Lubke of San Diego, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Fred J. Lubke was preceded to death by his son, Alan, in 1950; his parents; two sisters, Ethel Dahle and Alice Stiene; two brothers, Robert and Herbert; a brother, Raymond and a sister Frances, who both died in infancy.
