Matt Eidenschink
Matt J. Eidenschink, 83, of Decorah, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at the Aase Haugen Home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.
Alan Sensor was the organist. Soloist Clark Goltz sang "Here I Am Lord," "Blest Are They" "On Eagle's Wings" and "You Are Mine."
Mary Wemark was the lector.
Casket bearers were Chuck Eidenschink, Bill Jensen, Dick Jensen, Dick Richardson, Don Rude and Ron Rude.
Burial was at the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Matt was born Nov. 15, 1916, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., the son of Joseph and Mary (Riewer) Eidenschink. He was educated in the rural schools of the Detroit Lakes (Minn.) School System.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
On April 18, 1942, Matt was united in marriage to Ardath G. Goltz at the St. Benedict rectory.
Matt worked on farms as a farmhand, then was manager at Wapsie Hatchery after the war. Then he worked in Rudd and later at Buchheit's in Calmar and Decorah.
Before he retired in 1979, Matt also had served as a custodian at the Decorah High School.
His hobbies included playing cards, pool and Chicago Cubs baseball.
Matt was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. He had been a resident at the Aase Haugen Home since Jan. 7.
Survivors include three children, Diane and Frank Checchin of Galena, IL, Dean and Sheryll Eidenschink of Decorah, and Elaine and Loren Lensing of Belleville, IL; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice Richardson of Canton, Minn., and Gladys Rude of Decorah.
Matt Eidenschink was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ardath, who died Feb. 24, 1994; two sisters, Margaret Jensen and Kate Barta; and two brothers, George Brandt and Jerry Eidenschink.
