Edward Shileny

Edward Shileny, 80, of Spillville, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah after a long illness.

A funeral mass was held Monday, May 8, at 11 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Alan Sensor was the organist. Deb Speltz was the soloist.

Casket bearers were Jeff Bernatz, Tom Warner, Dave Hagen, Mike Warner, Jody Nieborg, Shane Bohlmann and Andrew Mihm.

Interment was in the church cemetery. The Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Edward Anthony Shileny, was born Aug. 10, 1919, on a farm near Spillville, the son of Frank F. and Emma (Snyder) Shileny.

He obtained his education by attending St. Wenceslaus School, Decorah High School and graduating from Luther College in 1942. Edward taught for over 40 years. His first teaching job was at Fort Atkinson High School. He also taught at Glencoe, Minn., Chatfield, Minn., and Waucoma, and served as principal, history, band and vocal instructor for 12 years at the Ridgeway High School. Edward taught social studies at South Winneshiek in Calmar for 24 years, retiring Aug. 8, 1988. He also farmed west of Spillville.

On Nov. 26, 1952, he married Sylvia (Novak) Bernatz at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. To this union one daughter, Sally, was born.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of Decorah; one daughter, Sally and Roger Mihm of St. Lucas and grandchildren Angela and Andrew; one step-daughter, Suzanne and Michael Warner of St. Louis Park, Minn., and step-grandchildren Michael, Jennifer Nieborg and Tommy, and step-greatgrandchildren Warner and Willem Nieborg and Alex and Andrew Warner; and two step-sons, Tom and Ruth Bernatz of New Hampton and step-grandchildren Kathy Bohlmann and Jeff Bernatz; and John Bernatz of Davenport.
