Louise Flickinger
Louise E. Flickinger, 92, of Decorah, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m., at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marion Miller officiating.
Diane Kvamme was the organist. The congregation sang "Just As I Am" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers were Jamie Brown, Neil Brown, Jay Flickinger, Jon Flickinger, Benjamin Shireman, Jeremey Shireman, Zachary Shireman and Emily Woodhouse.
Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Louise Evelyn (Ness) Flickinger was born Jan. 24, 1907, in Decorah, the daughter of O. J. and Martha (Anderson) Ness. She was baptized March 3, 1907, and confirmed May 21, 1922, at First Lutheran Church. She attended school in the Decorah area and graduated from Decorah High School.
On Feb. 21, 1928, Louise and Donald O. Flickinger were married in Galena, IL. To this union were born two children, Jan and Cynthia.
Before her marriage, Louise worked in Dubuque at Midland Chemical Co. as a secretary, then as an X-ray technician at The Clinic in Dubuque.
After marriage, she and Donald moved to Decorah, and they worked for Louise's father in the O. J. Ness Grocery Store, the store which they eventually took over and operated for many years. They called it The Family Store. Louise worked in the grocery store for about 70 years, right up until the time she went into the Eastern Star Home as a resident Aug. 21, 1991.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church, and its circle and Ladies Aid. She liked people, crossword puzzles, board games and playing cards.
Survivors include one son, Jan and Rizalin Flickinger of Decatur, IL.; one daughter, Cynthia and Gerald Brown of Dubuque, IL.; 10 grandchildren, 16 grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Lois Bishop of Dubuque.
Louise Flickinger was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, who died May 5, 1993; four sisters, Melvina Tovson, Jeanette Nelson, Thelma Digre and Mildred Hennings; and one brother, Amos Ness.
The family requested that any memorial gifts be given to First Lutheran Church or Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home.
