William H. Szabo

William "Bill" H. Szabo, 76, of Postville, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, with the Rev. Dave Lenth officiating.

The organist was Marlys Hager. The congregation sang "Just As I Am, Without One Plea," "Softly and Tenderly" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Casket bearers were Jeff Szabo, Daryl Szabo, Steve Schultz, Leo Schroeder, Kevin Smith and Stanley Schultz.

Military honors were performed by the Brockman-Hammersland American Legion Post No. 503 of Ossian.

Inurnment will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville handled arrangements.

Bill was born April 20, 1923, near Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Steve Szabo and Laura (Reisner) Szabo. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant and was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia.

Bill attended the Castalia school and graduated from Luana Consolidated Schools. In June of 1945 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Okinawa Operation, as well as in the Pacific Area, and received the Good Conduct Medal.

On Jan. 11,1953, he was married to Betty Jean Schroeder at the Lutheran parsonage at Waukon, Iowa. The couple had three children. Bill and Betty lived in Postville, where Bill hauled milk and then worked for the R.E.C. for a short time. They later farmed west of Castalia for 20 years and then moved to Postville in 1985.

They moved into their present home in 1987. Bill enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada, golfing, bowling, playing cards and antiques. Bill was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. He had served as secretary on the Church Council and as a Deacon. He also had been a member of the Tri-City Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; his son, Terry (Julia) Szabo; two grandchildren, April and Angela; his brothers and sisters, Robert (Mary) Szabo of Castalia, Edward Szabo of Decorah, Darlene Schultz of Decorah, Eugene (Jean) Szabo of Castalia, Dayle (Nadine) Szabo of Cedar Rapids, Victor Szabo of Castalia, Diane (William "Bill") Buddenberg of Castalia, and Leon (Fayne) Szabo of Postville; and two brothers-in-law, Earl Smith of Castalia and Duane Wander of Riverside, Calif.

Bill Szabo was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Lonny and
Lori Szabo; a brother, Theodore Szabo; and two sisters, Agnes Smith and Marilyn Wander.
