Betsy Smorstad

Betsy Smorstad, 99, of Decorah, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m., at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with the Revs. James Glesne, Tim Tostengard and Ole Winter officiating.

Diane Kvamme was the organist. Casket bearers were Wesley Martens, Gerald Hageman, Robert Rosendahl, Albert Ashbacher, Milton Hove and Sherman Oyen.

Interment was at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. The French & Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Betsy Theolina (Olson) Smorstad was born Sept, 2, 1899, in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County, the daughter of Hans and Anna (Akre) Olson. She was baptized and later reaffirmed her faith through her confirmation at Pontoppidon.

Betsy attended school through the fifth grade.

On Nov. 22, 1921 she was united in marriage with Frederick Smorstad in Decorah. To this union two children were born.

Betsy was a homemaker and enjoyed the outdoors, especially her garden and growing flowers.

Frederick preceded her in death in 1967. She had been a resident for a number of years at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Survivors include one daughter, Aria "Bernice" Martens of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Wesley Martens, Cheryl Taube and Carolyn Hageman; two great-grandchildren, Diane Jennings and Doni Taube; and one sister, Thora Larson of West Bend, Wis.

Betsy Smorstad was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Orville Smorstad; one brother, Henry Olson; and one sister, Carrie, Rosendahl.
