Olive Irene Frye
Olive Irene Frye, 88, of Decorah, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at the Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 2, at 11 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating.
The Rev. Marion Miller will be the organist. The congregation sang "Beautiful Savior" and "Amazing Grace."
Casket bearers will be Lester Erickson Jr., Thomas Erickson, James Harkness, Howard Sande, Greg Vick and Gerald D. Young.
Interment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Olive (Erickson) Frye was born July 4, 1910, on a rural farm in Canoe Township of Winneshiek County, the daughter of Olias and Clara (Iverson) Erickson. She was baptized and confirmed in Norwegian.
She attended rural Winneshiek County schools. She worked at the old Aase Haugen Home. Olive was a school bus driver.
On June 6, 1936, Olive married Clement Albert Frye of Decorah in La Crosse, Wis. Together they farmed in rural Canoe Township and Springwater areas for 40 years.
They had two children, Marilyn Irene and Ronald Duane. In 1969, the couple moved to Decorah, where they owned and operated the Handyman Shop business.
Olive was a member of First Lutheran in Decorah. She enjoyed baking, visiting and sharing her Norwegian humor. She had an appreciation of bird watching and nature.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Ronald Duane Thornton of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren, Raedean (Thornton) Richter of Minneapolis, Minn., Duane Thornton of Minneapolis, Minn., Cassandra (Thornton) Carver of Buffalo, Minn., and Michael Thornton of Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie Sigafoos, Christopher Thornton and Raeanne Richter; three sisters, Violet, (Erickson) Winger, Evelyn (Erickson) Hahn and Alice (Erickson) Tollefson, all of Decorah; three sisters-in-law, Lenna Erickson, Betty Erickson and Gladys Erickson, all of Decorah; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Olive Frye was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clement, who died March 5, 1983; her two children, Marilyn Irene (Frye) Thornton, May 26, 1996, and Ronald Duane Frye, Dec. 9, 1981; and four brothers, Earl, Maurice, Lester and Robert Erickson.
