Leo Cashman

Leo Cashman, 93, of Masonville, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at the Northeast Iowa Regional Hospital in Manchester after a short illness.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monti, with the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus officiating.

Mass servers were Jason Baragary, Nicholas Wilgenbusch and Brian Wulfekuhle. Music was provided by Sara Kane on the organ and the vocalist was Joan Schissel.

Casket bearers were Robert McAleer, Ron Burke, Paul Woodhouse, Stephen Kester, Daniel Kester and David Kester.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery south of Ryan. The Fawcett Funeral Home of Winthrop handled arrangements.

Leo was born April 4, 1905, at Coggon, the son of Thomas Francis and Elizabeth (Reilly) Cashman. He was united in marriage with Alice McAreavy Nov. 17, 1925, at Coggon.

The family lived on a farm south of Ryan after their marriage and in 1937 moved to their present farm south of Masonville.

Alice died Nov. 4, 1982. Leo continued living on the farm until a few years ago, when he moved to the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He enjoyed playing cards, telling stories and laughing.

Survivors include one daughter, Doris (Shafer) Cole of Decorah; one son, Donald of Masonville, daughter-in-law Mary Cashman of Waterloo; six
grandchildren, Tom Cashman, Bob Cashman, Stephen and Ann Kester, Daniel and Jami Kester, David Kester and Pam Heidenrich, and Darlene; and Paul Woodhouse; six great grandchildren, Jennifer Lystra, Dallas Cashman, Shaina Kester, Ryan Kester, Aaron Kester, Katherine Kester, Alicia Woodhouse and Josh Woodhouse; one great-great-grandson, Caleb Joseph Lystra; two step-granddaughters; six step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-granddaughters; two sisters, Sister Mary Eleanor Cashman
R.S.M. of Cedar Rapids and Generose Casey of Cedar Rapids; and other relatives and friends.

Leo Cashman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; one son, Joseph; one infant son; one infant daughter; three sisters, Marie, Sister Mary Thomasine and Eleanor; and two brothers, Edward and Raymond.
