Norman Jermeland

Norman Jermeland, 77, of West Union, died at the Good Samaritan Center there Wednesday, June 16,1999, after a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 19, at 11 a.m., at the First Lutheran Evangelical Church, Ossian, with the Rev. Dennis Hugdahl officiating.

Helen Guyer was the organist.

Casket bearers were Todd Jermeland, Travis Jermeland, Aldin Massman Jr., Robert Kloster, Stan Tope and Rick Benzing.

The Bumham-Wood Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Norman Oliver Jermeland was born March 26, 1922, in Ossian, the son of Theodore Jermeland and Lena Knudtson. He was baptized April 28, 1922, and confirmed Sept. 13, 1936, at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian.

Norman attended rural school near Ossian. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was united in marriage with Marjorie Walvatne April 15, 1945, at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural West Union. The couple lived in West Union all their married lives.

Norman worked as a farmhand for a few years. He worked for Carpenter and Kraft Redi-Mix Concrete Co. of West Union for 34 years as a truck driver.

Fishing, Norwegian stories, watching the Chicago Cubs baseball team and playing the harmonica were his hobbies.

Norman entered the Good Samaritan Home in West Union Dec. 5,1994.

Survivors include his wife Marjorie of West Union; three sons, David and Beverly Jermeland of West Union, Joel and Karen Jermeland of Decorah, and Mark Jermeland of Fayette; two daughters, Rebecca and Don Kelly of Hawkeye, and Mary and Keith Hennig of Evansdale, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Also surviving, are three brothers, Willard Jermeland of Mason City, Joseph Jermeland of Clear Lake and Theodore Jermeland of West Union; and four sisters, Selma Johnson of Mason City, Lillian Torkelson of Garner, Merna Walvatne of West Union and LaVonne Benzing of Monona.

Norma Jermeland was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
