Leora Mundt
Leora Mundt, 79, of Castalia, died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 14, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, with the Rev. Dave Lenth officiating. Marlys Hager was the organist.
Casket bearers were Lyle Kneeskern, Larry Brockway, Rodney Livingood, Daryl Helgerson, Larry Svendsen and Lowell Corlett.
Honorary bearers were the following members of the Thursday Club: Marilyn Breitsprecher, Ruby Koenig, Arlene Everman, Delores Timmerman, Betty Monroe, Lorraine Monroe, Gail Frederick and Jeanette Schroeder.
Burial was at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia. The Schutte Funeral & Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Leora Bell (Bloxham) Mundt was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Franklin Township, Clayton County, near Luana, the daughter of Lee Sumner Bloxham and Jadie Belle (Kelly) Bloxham.
She attended the Franklin Township School No. 4, then the Waukon High
School and graduated from the Ossian High School.On Sept. 2, 1938, she was married to Leslie John Mundt by the Rev. William Striepe at the home of her parents. To this union four children were born: Donald, Kelly, Shelby and Craig.
The couple farmed in the Ossian area until 1979, when they moved to Castalia.
Leora was an active member of the Women of the ELCA at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia since 1938. She held every office of the women's organization and served on the Church Council as well. She was a member of the Altar Guild and taught Sunday School. She was a charter member of the Bloomfield Township Historical Society, served as secretary of the Greenwood (Centennial) Cemetery Board and was a member of the KEWS. Leora was an Iowa Hawkeye fan, as well as an ardent supporter of the Iowa teams. She also wrote poetry for her relatives and friends for special occasions. A favorite pastime was to travel around the nearby countryside and visit many interesting sites along the way.
Survivors include her children, Donald and Joyce Mundt of Danbury, Conn., Kelly and Ruth Mundt of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Shelby Mundt of Castalia, and Craig and Linda Mundt of Ossian; six grandchildren, Deb (John) Jojo of Melrose, N. Y., Donald (Marjorie) Mundt of Milford, Conn., John (Vickie) Mundt of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Kristin (Mike) Statz of Portage, Wis., Jeromy Mundt of Spokane, Wash., and Erica (Paul) Davis of Ossian; and two great-grandchildren, Malana Jojo of Melrose, N. Y. and Kevin Davis of Ossian.
Also surviving are two sisters, Beulah and William "Bill" Wolfe of Waukon, and Veva June and Morris Budge of Upper Lake, Calif.; five sisters-in-law, Viola (Milton) Birdsell of Postville, Ruth and Jim Kallevang of Cresco, Marvel and Walter Ode of Lanesboro, Minn., Mildred and Vernon Lofte of Ossian, and Elda (Lloyd) Mundt of Grants Pass, Ore. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leora Mundt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Les who
died in 1991; a great-granddaughter, Marie Charity Davis, her twin sister,
