Gregory Julius Lechtenberg

Gregory J. Lechtenberg, 91, of Ossian, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after falling and breaking his hip two days earlier.

A funeral mass was held Saturday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m., at the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with the Rev. Msgr. Cletus Hawes and the Rev. Vincent Simon officiating.

Sister Carol Hemesath, O.S.F., was the organist. Special music was provided by Silver Memories. There was also congregational singing. The eucharistic minister was Jeanne Hageman. Gift carriers were Amanda and Loren Ihnet, and Katie, Michael, Joe and Matthew Meyer. Lectors were Terri Ihnet and Ann Meyer.

Casket bearers were Todd Lechtenberg, Kevin Lechtenberg, Paul Lechtenberg, Michael Hageman, Greg Hageman and David Brincks.

Interment was at the St. Francis Cemetery in Ossian. The Schmitz Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Gregory Julius Lechtenberg was born July 17, 1909, near Festina, the son of Herman and Catherine (Uhlenhake) Lechtenberg.

He was baptized at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church at Festina, July 18, 1909, by the late Rev. A. J. Rubly and confirmed in his faith there Oct. 10, 1923, by the Rev. Jacobus J. Keane. He attended school at St. Mary's School in Festina and stayed on the farm to assist with the family farming.

On Jan. 30, 1934, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hauer at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. The Rev. A.J. Rubly officiated at the ceremony.

The couple made their first home in Calmar for two years, and then moved to the farm two miles west of Ossian.

Greg was a good farmer who enjoyed cows and horses. He spent many years as a dairyman. He also liked to play cards in his spare time.

Survivors include his children, Irenus and Marcia Lechtenberg of
Bloomingdale, Illinois, and Inez and Edward Hageman of New Vienna; and
seven grandchildren, Terri (Brian) Ihnet, Todd (Sharon) Lechtenberg, Kevin (Kate) Lechtenberg, Paul Lechtenberg, Michael Hageman, Ann (Leon) Meyer and Greg Hageman.

Also surviving are seven great grandchildren, Katie, Michael, Joel and Matthew Meyer, Amanda and Loren Ihnet, and Hannah Lechtenberg; one brother, Joseph and Caroline Lechtenberg; and four sisters, Julia and Andrew Hemesath of Calmar, Odelia and Leander Gremer of Calmar; Catherine and Arthur Huber of Lawler, and Rita and Linus Bodensteiner of New Hampton.

Gregory Lechtenberg was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth, who died in 1992; one son, Leon, who died in 1993; a brother, Theodore Lechtenberg; and three sisters, Bridget Lechtenberg, Edvina Thuente and Bertha Thuente.
