Clara Vine

Clara Vine, 68, of Waukon, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, at her home in Waukon after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 1, at 1:30 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with the Rev. Lynn Groe officiating.

Casket bearers were Donald Halse, Harlan Vine, James Esser, Roger Kerndt, Dan Treangen and Richard Hammel.

Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah. The Martin Funeral Home of Waukon handled arrangements.

Clara Lucille (Ness) Vine was born June 2, 1930, in Decorah, the daughter of George and Luella (Vick) Ness. She attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1949.

On Oct. 22, 1949, she married Harold Vine at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. They farmed together for 27 years in rural Decorah. Clara also worked for a time as a telephone operator. In 1977, they moved to Waukon, where she worked as a cook at Northgate Care Center, the Waukon schools and the Waukon Living Center.

Clara was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Waukon and it's women's circles, as well as the Oneota Rebekah Lodge in Decorah. She enjoyed her card club. She was known for her great sense of humor and her Norwegian cooking.

Survivors include her husband, Harold; three daughters, Carolyn and Paul Rover of Greene, Diane and Ted Jacobsen of Coralville, and Sharon and Greg Mitchell of Decorah; her sister, Sally Breitsprecher of Cresco; her brother, George Ness, Jr. of Calmar; four granddaughters, Andrea Rover, Teresa Mitchell, Allison Mitchell and Emily Jacobsen; one grandson, Eric Jacobsen; good friends Norma and Donnie Halse; and other friends and relatives.

Clara Vine was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial donations may be made in Clara's name to Winneshiek County Hospice, Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, Iowa.
