Norma Stortz

Norma Stortz, 73, of Decorah, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral mass was held Saturday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m., at the St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Gary Krapfl officiating.

Alan Sensor was the organist. Soloists were Daryl Luzum and Joan Schissel.

Casket bearers were Randy Stortz, Daryl Schultz, John Garwood, Jay Uthoff, Daryl Reicks and Kyle Koenig.

Interment was at the St. Benedict Cemetery. The French and Balik Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Norma Georgene (Schultz) Stortz was born June 1, 1925, the daughter of George and Esther (Meyer) Schultz of Castalia.

She graduated from Castalia High School and attended St. Luke's School of Nursing. Norma enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II, worked at St. Luke's Hospital and at the hospital in Decorah.

Norma married Charles R. Stortz Oct. 6, 1949, at St. Benedict Church in Decorah.

They lived in Independence, DeWitt, Spencer, Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids before returning to Decorah in 1986.

Norma's favorite activities included time with her family, knitting, crocheting and all of the volunteer work she did throughout her life.

Survivors include three sons, Tom and wife Diane of Omaha, Neb., Tim and wife Tamara of Evergreen, Colo., and Ted and wife Barb of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Leila and husband Joe Lake of Minneapolis, and Lisa of Minneapolis; sister Gwen Koenig of Castalia; brother-in-law Gerald and Ruth Stortz of Decorah; and sister-in-law Marilyn Reicks of Bella Vista, Ark. There are nine grandchildren, Tanya (and husband Mike McCoy), Troy, Tara, Shannon, Lerin, Alison, Katie, Michaelen and Weston.

Norma Stortz was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her daughter, Leslie; and her parents, George and Esther Schultz.
