Arnold J. Soukup, 87, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at his home in Protivin.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 11, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, with the Rev. Allen Schmitt officiating.

Readers were Kevin Koch and Joe Bouska. Altar servers were Michael, Catherine and Daniel Bouska.

Eucharistic minister was Elaine Doherty. Gifts were carried by Chanda Bouska, Kara Koch and Casey Bouska.

Burial was at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Protivin. The Conway Funeral Home in Cresco handled arrangements.

Arnold Joseph Soukup was bom Oct. 24, 1911, on a farm in Winneshiek County near Ridgeway, the first child of William "Bill" and Caroline "Carrie" (Ptacek) Soukup.

He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville. He attended school in Ridgeway and had to help on the family farm until he was able to start farming on his own.

On April 27, 1936, he was united in marriage with Grace Hruska at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Arnie farmed his entire working life near Ridgeway until he retired in 1981 and moved into Protivin.

He was a Lincoln Township trustee in Winneshiek County for 26 years. Arnie enjoyed hunting and, in later years, he did some fishing. He also enjoyed playing a quick game of cards with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Grace; daughter Patricia and Dave Bouska of Ridgeway; three grandchildren, Chanda Bouska, Kara and husband Kevin Koch, and Casey Bouska; one sister, Helen Carolan of Ridgeway; two nieces, Elaine Doherty and Rita Vettraino; and six nephews, Walter, Roger, Kenneth, Clifford, Randy and Mark Carolan.

Arnold Soukup was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Herman; a sister-in-law, Elvira Soukup; a brother-in-law, Fred Carolan; a nephew, Stanley Carolan; and a great-niece, Dawn Doherty.
