Lyle Wilbur, 83, of Decorah and formerly of Prosper, Minn., died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility of congestive heart failure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Burr Oak United Methodist Church, with Pastor Letha Rogers & Rev. Wayne Wasta
officiating.

Organist was Ruth Price. Soloist Pat Harvey sang "The Borning Cry" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." The congregation sang "Abide with Me."

Pallbearers were: Rick Arneson, Cory Haack, Jason Haack, Darrel Preble, Andrew Wilbur; Benjamin Wilbur, Linn Wilbur, Reuben Wilbur, Russ Wilbur and Steve Wilbur.

Honorary Pallbearers were all of Lyle Wilbur's friends.

Burial was in the Burr Oak Cemetery, with Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah handling arrangements.

Lyle Everette Wilbur was born February 14, 1917 at home in Hesper Township, to Reuben Lee and Bessie Elizabeth (Sheley) Wilbur.

He graduated from the Mabel High School, class of 1936.

On Sept. 6, 1941, he married Alice L. Albertson at Burr Oak United Methodist Church. The couple were the parents of five children.

Lyle and Alice Wilbur farmed in the Prosper, Minn, area for many years, until 1978, when they moved to Decorah.

Lyle Wilbur worked as a carpenter, which he really enjoyed. John Martin worked with him until his death, and then Sidney McClintock worked with Lyle Wilbur until his death.

Lyle Wilbur was a member of Burr Oak United Methodist Church, and was a treasurer, trustee, and served on several committees, including the church building expansion committee. He also shingled the church steeple.

He served on Prosper County School Board, the Mabel School Board and Canton Township Board.

He loved to bowl, pitch horses, play cards and checkers. He was the Iowa State Checkers Champion three different times.

Lyle Wilbur was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

On Sept. 7, 2000, Lyle Wilbur suffered a heart attack. He was hospitalized, returned home for awhile, and then became a resident of the Oneota Riverview Care Facility on Nov. 6, 2000.

Surviving Lyle Wilbur are his wife, Alice Wilbur of Decorah; five children: Curtis and Janis Wilbur of Miller, S.D.; Cleon and Marilyn Wilbur of Prosper, Minn.; Karen and Arnie Arneson of Canton, Minn.; Wanda and Ron Haack of Bemidji, Minn. and Mark and Kathy Wilbur of Burr Oak.

Additional survivors include 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren: Teresa and Christian Klien of Asbury, N. J., and Steve of White Bear Lake, Minn.; Russell and Pam Wilbur of Cold Spring, Minn., and Adam and Timothy; Melissa and Paul Steen of Fridley, Minn., and Maya; Cynn Wilbur and Alan Schultz of Minneapolis, Minn.; Stefanie Wilbur; Kris Vetsch of Rochester, Minn.; Keri Vetsch of St. Cloud, Minn.; Susan Jarland of Harmony, Minn., and Taylor and Jordan; Rick and Lisa Arneson of Racine, Minn., and Paige and Lauren; Sarah Arneson of Stewartville, Minn.; Darrel Preble of Rochester, Minn.; Jason and Anna Haack of Mankato, Minn., and Victoria, Ron and Amber; Cory Haack of Bemidji, Minn., and Conner, Benjamin, Andrew and Bianca Wilbur of Burr Oak; and one sister, Letha Rongley of Mabel, Minn.

Lyle Everette Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lee Wilbur; one sister, Lois Kraling; one grandson, Trent Wilbur; and one great-granddaughter, Tristan Haack.
