Edwin Henry Monroe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Monroe, Sr., was born at Castalia, Iowa, Dec. 23, 1924. He received his education in the Castalia and Ossian public schools and grew to manhood in this community. He was a World War II veteran serving overseas in France and Belgium. He worked in various places; living in Colorado for a time, later returning to Castalia where he was engaged in farming, county maintenance and trucking.

Virginia Mae Eberling, daughter of Elmer and Lucille Eberling, was born at Postville, Iowa, Dec 22, 1931. She received her education at the Luana and Castalia public schools, and grew to womanhood in this community.

On Feb. 20, 1955, Mr. Monroe was united in marriage to Virginia Eberling. To this union was born six children: Larry Dean, age 11, in the sixth grade, Robert Lynn, age 10, in the 5th grade; Patty Lou, 9, in the 3rd grade; Wayne Allen, 6, in the 1st grade; Jean Ann, age 5, in kindergarten ; and Janice Lorraine, age 4, at home.

Death came to the entire family in their home as the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Mr. Monroe is survived by his parents, two brothers, James of West Union, and Henry, Jr., of Castalia; also one daughter, Roberta, by a previous marriage, who has made her home with her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Monroe, Jr., since she was three years old.

Mrs. Monroe is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Eberling, a brother, Robert of Postville, and a sister (Helen) Mrs. Joe Reierson, of Elgin.

Services were held from the Ossian Public School gymnasium Jan 12 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Curtis H. Webster officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant View cemetery at Castalia. Schutte's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Edwin was given a military funeral by the Brockman-Hammersland Legion Post 503 of Ossian. Nearly 500 attended the services.

I am not sure if this was a Postville, Iowa newspaper of the time or an Ossian newspaper clipping, from my mother's obituary collection, hand dated 1968. Posted for genealogical purposes, contributor is not related.
