Cora Tangen, age 96, of Waukon, formerly of Decorah, died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon after a long illness. Funeral service was held Monday, November 16 at Decorah Lutheran Church, Decorah, with Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah.

Cora Patricia (Landmeyer) Tangen was born October 8, 1913 to Henry and Clara (Johnson) Landmeyer on the family farm. Cora attended rural country schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1932. Cora went to Upper Iowa University in Fayette to become a teacher. She taught at rural Winneshiek County country schools, St. Benedict’s School, and at North Winneshiek and then later at Sunflower Daycare.

Cora married Joseph Tangen February 17, 1934 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in New Hampton. They farmed in Canoe and Glenwood Townships and in the early 1970s they moved to Decorah. Joseph died in 1979 and Cora continued working until the early 1990s. Several years ago Cora moved to an apartment in Waukon to be closer to her family and later moved to Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Cora enjoyed doing things with her family and was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church.

Cora is survived by two daughters, Iona Farley of Waukon and Iola Erickson of Duluth, MN; one son, J.C. (Gwen) Tangen of Charles City; 14 grandchildren, Gary (Dawn) Farley of Waukon, Cheryl (Hans) Reisgies of San Jose, CA, Mark (Lori) Farley of Cedar Falls, Greg Farley of Lawrence, KS, Larry (Robin) Farley of Denver, Dan Erickson of Redondo Beach, CA, Jackie (Bryan) Knapp of Saginaw, MI, Alane Erickson of Proctor, MN, Kathy (Mark) Stack of Superior, WI, Brian (Kyle) Erickson of Duluth, MN, Curtis Erickson of Hermantown, MN, Mitch (Barbie) Erickson of North Aurora, IL, Janet (Daniel) Nallen of Duluth, MN, Art Tangen of Albuquerque, NM, and June (Wyn) Kelley of Jefferson City, MO; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Cora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; two sons-in-law, William (Bill) Farley and Ben Erickson; one grandson, Bruce Erickson; and one sister, Esther Engen.

Casketbearers were Wyn Kelley, Matt Farley, Larry Farley, Gary Farley, Dan Erickson and Brian Erickson.

Schluter-Balik Funeral Home of Decorah assisted the family.
