Koenig, Milton Frederick -- 1923 - 1993

Milton "Mick" Frederick Koenig, son of Fred and Alma (Schlee) Koenig, was born April 27, 1923 on the family farm in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Castalia, Iowa. He died early Friday morning, Nov. 12, 1993 in Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, Wis. due to complications following heart surgery. He was 70.

He was baptized May 13, 1923 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, and confirmed there on April 5, 1936. He attended the Oakhill country school near his home.

On Nov. 17, 1948 he married Gwendolyn Rae Schultz at the home of her parents, George B. and Esther I. Schultz, at Castalia. To this union four children were born. They have farmed on the family century farm all of their lives.

Milton was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, and had served on the church council. He was a charter member of the Bloomfield Township and Winneshiek County Historical Society; a member of the Bloomfield Cemetery Association for 12 years, serving as chairman for seven years, and a Bloomfield Township Trustee since 1980. In the 1940s, he was a member of the Castalia Baseball Team.

He is preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Gwenn, of Castalia; one son, Kyle Koenig of Omaha, Neb.; three daughters, Suzanne and her husband, Keith Muller of Cedar Rapids, Melissa Hammersland of Postville and Laurice and her husband Daryl Schultz of Postville; seven grandchildren, Blake, Kari and Kirstin Schultz, Shanna and Lisa Hammersland, Ryan and Casey Muller and a step grandson, Justin Muller; five brothers, Harlan Koenig and his wife Lorraine, Leonard Koenig, Loren Koenig and his wife, Ruby, and Earl Koenig and his wife Bernice, all of Postville, and Verne Koenig and his wife Ardith, of Decorah, and a sister-in-law, Norma Stortz of Decorah. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Sunday, Nov. 14, 1993 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia, the Rev. H. W. Wolfgram officiating. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was Monday, Nov. 15, 1993 at 10 a.m. in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.
