Vern E. "Whitey" Schissel, 73, of 575 Cooper Place, Dubuque, IA., died at 11:05 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at home from complications of cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, with Monsignor Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where the rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1936, in Ossian, son of Elmer and Bea (Holtey) Schissel. He married Sharleen Smith, of West Union, on July 30, 1955, at St. Francis de Sales, Ossian. They had seven children and a foster daughter. They enjoyed dancing for many years.

He worked for Frommelt Industries for 33 years, where he was plant manager.

Whitey played softball for many years. During his 18 years of retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, playing pool, taking long walks and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Sharleen; his children, Frank (Pricilla) Schissel, of Springfield, Mass., Jay (Eileen) Schissel, of Davenport, Iowa, Tom (Penny) Schissel, John Schissel, Dellane (Steve) Tressel and Lori (Larry) Karwoski, all of Dubuque; a foster daughter, Pam (Rich) Lenz, of Peosta, Iowa; a son-in-law, Jeff Swift, of Dubuque; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lynn (Steve) Wolf, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a brother, Donnie (Joan) Schissel, of Ossian.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Peggy Swift; and three brothers, Darrel, Bill and Lee.

The family wishes to thank Hospice of Dubuque for all their care and kindness during his time of need.
