Walter B. Pilgrim

Walter B. Pilgrim, youngest son of Charles and Nancy "Nellie" (Boyer) Pilgrim, was born at Hesper, Winneshiek county, Iowa on February 23, 1876. He passed away at the Decorah Retirement Center on December 5, 1964 at the age of 88 years, nine months and 12 days.

When he was 11 years of age, his family moved to a farm north of Frankville then known as the Beard farm. Six years later the family moved to Madison township, west of Decorah where he lived until his marriage.

On November 23, 1898 Walter Pilgrim was united in marriage to Lottie Birdsell at her parents home west of Frankville. To this union three children were born: Lawrence Pilgrim of Lake Hughes, California; Florence, Mrs. Arthur Ruen, of near Frankville, and Mrs. Evelyn Thomas, Decorah.

After 47 years of active farming, they retired to Frankville in 1946. They lived 65 years of their 66 years of married life in Frankville township. They observed their 66th wedding anniversary on November 23, 1964.

He attended the rural schools of Winneshiek county. As a young man he joined the Presbyterian Church and Good Templars at Frankville. He later transferred his membership to the Methodist Church at Decorah.

He took an active interest in all community affairs; serving as secretary of the local school district; becoming a member of the Masonic lodge, from which he received his 50th year certificate in January 1959; being a trustee of Frankville township for many years; and a director of the Frankville Cheese Factory.

Mr. Pilgrim is survived by his wife; three children; eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Funeral services were held at the Community Presbyterian Church of Frankville on Tuesday at 1:30 with the Rev. Lloyd So__enson and the Rev Walter Martin of Postville in charge of the rites. Ray Douglass of Postville conducted the Masonic service. Interment was in the Frankville cemetery.
