WAYNE WILLIAM BRANDT 1915-2003

Wayne Brandt died at his home in rural Frankville following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. at Frankville Presbyterian Church in Frankville with Rev. James Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Frankville Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.

Wayne William Brandt was born February 19, 1915, on the rural Frankville farm of his parents, Walter and Hazel (Kilpatrick) Brandt. He was baptized and confirmed at the Frankville Stone School. He worked as a land surveyor for Winneshiek County before starting farming with his father, using horses in the early days.

In August of 1941 he married Frances Headington. They farmed in Frankville Township, where they raised their three daughters, until moving to Waukon in 1973. Frances died shortly after.

On December 28, 1974, he married LaVonne Snitker Winters at the Frankville Presbyterian Church and welcomed her four daughters into his family. In 1976 Wayne and LaVonne bought an acreage near Frankville and built a home where they have lived ever since. In addition to farming, at various times of his working life Wayne did carpentry, custom farming, clerked for various sales barns, and purchased cattle for area farmers.

Wayne was a life-long member of Frankville Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He loved the rural life and spending time outdoors. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting, remained an avid fisherman, loved to tend to his gardens and lawn, and spent many hours collecting and shelling walnuts and hickory nuts. He treated his livestock with special care and enjoyed tending to their needs. He liked to spend time playing cards and visiting with his many friends. He particularly liked spending time with his family and especially enjoyed celebrating his 28th wedding anniversary with LaVonne on the 28th of August, 2002. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, both young and old.

Survivors include his wife, LaVonne of Frankville; three daughters, Karen Olson of Boise, Idaho, Karlene Schmidt of Great Bend, Kansas, and Konnie (Jack) Malloch of Colorado Springs, Colo; four step-daughters, Cindy (Larry) Olson of Gunder, Iowa, Peggy (Robert) Bakken and Deloris (Wes) Spilde, both of Belvidere, Ill., and Bonnie (David) Zidlicky of Ridgeway; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Brandt of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Frances; a granddaughter, Chonda Spilde; a brother, Wesley; and a sister, Beverly Peck.
