Mrs. Dennis Horen passed away at 1 o'clock Saturday morning, Nov. 8th 1924 at her home in Decorah, Iowa after an illness of five days, Diptheria was the cause of her death.

Mary Henrietta Werhan was born September 16, 1877 near Postville, Iowa. She was the daughter of August and Emma (Segrist) Werhan. She received her education in the public schools of Winneshiek County. On September 12, 1906 in Decorah, she united in marriage with Dennis Horen, who with three daughters, survive. The surviving children are Lauretta K, age 17; Thora D. age 13, and Katherine I. age 11. She is also survived by her mother who lives in Ridgeway, Iowa and the following brothers and sisters, Darwin L. Werhan, Eli C. Lee H. Bert A. and Nettie C. To these the sympathy of the community is extended in their loss, which is so hard to bear.

Mrs. Horen was a faithful member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church in this city. She was a loving wife and mother, and a kind neighbor and friend. During the past three weeks she had been caring for her youngest daughter, Katherine, when she was taken ill and passed away after five days of suffering. The passing away of Mrs. Horen was extremely sad, as the home was quarantined and the neighbors and friends were unable to help the bereaved husband and children, who were then doing all that loving hands could do to save Katherine, who was seriously ill.

Funeral services for Mrs. Horen were held the same day that she died at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, at the Catholic Cemetery, where burial was made. Father Hogan officiated. All the deceased's brothers attended the funeral, but her sister Mrs. Nettie Gathman, of Iroquois, S. D. was unable to be here. Others from out of town who attended the funeral were John Murtha and daughter, Mabel of Cresco and Ed Kuntz, wife and daughter.

Note: Obituries from the Decorah Newspaper spell the last name as Horen, but the headstones in the Catholic Cemetery, Decorah, IA. the last name is spelled Horan
