SERVICES HELD FOR IVA MAY AMES

Funeral services for Iva May Ames were held Thursday, September 12, at 1 p.m. in the United Methodist Church at Castalia. She died Saturday, Sept. 7, in the Good Samaritan Center at Waukon at the age of 90 years.

The Rev. Ken Seney officiated, with a prayer by Verdon Swenson, Florence Albright, church pianist, accompanied the soloist, Kenneth Timmerman. He sang, Going Down the Valley and Each Step I Take. The congregation sang Love Divine.

Casket bearers were William Ohloff, Virgil Reckward, Bill Buddenberg, Keith Bodensteiner, Dale Bodensteiner, Charles Linderbaum, Henry Monroe, Jr., Ronald Ehler and Jerry Monroe.

Honorary casket bearers were grandchildren and great grandchildren: Randy, Nancy, Scott, Pam, Karla, Kim, Doyle, Jackie, Nora, Phillip, Dawn, Dana, Brittany, Bridget, Blake, Chelsey, Collin, Nicholas, Stephanie, Lyndsey, Nyssa, Kyle and Kelsey.

Iva May Burns was born May 9, 1906, in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County, near Castalia to Maron Francis and Myrta Ermina (McMartin) Burns.

She attended the rural Moneek School No. 5 and was graduated from Postville High School in 1923. She taught at the Stendel School No. 6 and the Moneek School No. 5 until 1930.

May 30, 1930, she married Hyless Stendel in the Methodist parsonage at Decorah. They became the parents of two children. The family farmed in the Castalia area. Hyless died in 1942 and she continued to farm until 1944. In the fall of 1945, she began teaching at the Frankville Township Hyde School.

November 12, 1946, she married Miles Calvin Ames in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Ia. They farmed in the Castalia area.

Mrs. Ames was a member of the United Merhodist Church at Castalia and the U.M. Women's group, the Senior Citizens, the M.C.A. Club and both the township and county historical societies.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; a brother, Marshall Burns; a sister, Marie, who died at birth; and a half-sister, Hazel Fuller.

Surviving are her children, Darlene and her husband, Spencer Graves of Decorah and Earl Stendel and his wife, Arlene of Castalia; a stepdaughter, Linda Ames Norton and her husband, Ray of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Randall Graves, Nancy and her husband, Jeff Cronin, Scott Stendel and his wife, Elaine, Pam and her husband, Doug Buddenberg, Karla and her husband, Ken Hanson and Kim and her husband, Dave Paul; and two step grandchildren, Doyle Stoll and his wife, Sue and Jackie Stoll.

Also surviving are 12 great grandchildren: Nora and Phillip Cronin, Dawn and Dana Stendel, Brittany, Bridget and Blake Buddenberg, Chelsey and Collin Hanson and Nicholas, Stephanie and Lyndsey Paul; and three step great grandchildren, Nyssa and Kyle Stoll and Kelsey Kiwala and a special friend, Lee Candee of Maynard.

Interment was in the Greenwood (Centennial) Cemetery, rural, Ossian, Iowa.

Iva May Stendel Ames, daughter of Marion Francis and Myrta Ermina (McMartin) Burns, was born May 9, 1906, in Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek county, near Castalia, Iowa. She passed away Saturday, September 7, 1996, in the Good Samaritan Center at Waukon, Iowa. She had reached the age of 90 years, 3 months and 28 days.

She attended the rural Moneek School No. 5 and was graduated from Postville High School in 1923. May taught at the Stendel School No. 6 and the Moneek School No. 5 until 1930.

On May 30, 1930 she was married to Hyless Stendel in the Methodist parsonage at Decorah. They had two children, Darlene and Earl. The family farmed in the Castalia area.
