John Ambrose

Funeral services were held for J. F. Ambrose at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville on Thursday afternoon, March 22. The Rev. DeBuhr, former minister of the Ludlow Church near here officiated.

John F. Ambrose passed away near his home northwest of Frankville on Monday morning, March 19. He was born June 17, 1905 in Winneshiek county, the youngest son of John F. and Martha Snitker (sic). His father died January 1906, when (sic) Mrs. Ambrose moved to Forest City to make a new home for the family. He received his education in Forest City and returned to Winneshiek county in the Spring (sic) of 1925 where he has since resided. He was married to Mrs. Leora Letchford Waters at the Methodist Church in Decorah on December 26, 1925.

Mr. Ambrose served for many years as a board member of the Frankville Cheese Factory and was vice president for several years. He was a member of the Whistling Bit Saddle Club, the Decorah Saddle Club and the Drill Team. He served as a board member of the drill team.

Mr. Ambrose is survived by his wife, the former Leora Letchford. Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. John Marcellus of West Bend; two brothers, Clyde of Belmond and Clifford of Forest City. Six nieces, two nephews, eight great-nieces and nephews, also mourn his passing.

Those coming from a distance to attend the funeral of F. J. (sic) Ambrose were: Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Ambrose and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Quigley, Paul Jr., Patty and Jeffry, all of Belmond; Mrs. Lucille Marcellus and Mr. and Mrs. James Marcellus of West Bend; Mr. and Mrs. George Otis of Albert Lea, Minnesota; Clifford Ambrose and Clyde Fox (sic) of Forest City; Mr. and Mrs. Kelse Webster of Austin, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Letchford of Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. James Drew of Waukesha, Wisconsin; Henry Hoffman of Stratsford, Wisconsin; Mrs. Russell Humphrey of Toledo, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Webster, Mrs. Harriet Letchford and Virginia of Waukon.

Postville Herald newspaper clipping, hand dated 1956, from my mother's obituary collection. Mother has written in the margin of the obituary the following: "He hung himself in barn on his other property."
