Roland Meyer

Roland "Rolly" Elmer Meyer, of Castalia, passed away at his home on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006. He was 77.

Funeral Services were held Monday, Oct. 16, at the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. The Reverend Dave L. Lenth officiated. Special music was provided by Pastor Dave and Sarah Lenth and organist, Marlys Hager. Casket bearers were: Mike Plaht, Randy Plaht, Larry Plaht, Terry Meyer, Jason White, Bryan Livingood, Mark Meyer, Brent Livingood. Honorary casket bearers were: Bradley Plaht, and Scott Plaht. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia, with Military Honors by the Brockman & Hammersland American Legion Post #503 of Ossian. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Rolly was born June 24, 1929, to Fritz Frederick and Bertha Louise Caroline (Kuhse) Meyer, on the family farm south of Postville in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County.

Rolly was baptized July 21, 1929, by the Reverend E. H. Franke and confirmed April 18, 1943, by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. He attended the Springfield School and graduated from Postville High School in 1947.

He began working as an electrician at Postville Electric. Rolly farmed and later operated his own milk route and livestock trucking business. He entered the military in 1953. He lived in Postville for a short time and then moved to his present residence southwest of Postville. Rolly had also driven a milk route for Gerald Hager, feed delivery for Earl Ruckdaschel, and for Szabo Construction.

Rolly's spare time was spent in fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed hunting for deer.

Rolly was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia.

He was married to Marilyn Bray on Feb. 25, 1967. They had a daughter, Sally.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Sally; one brother, Richard (Darlene) Meyer; a sister-in-law, Doris Meyer, and a brother-in-law, Harvey Plaht.

Rolly is survived by four brothers, three sisters, nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and his extended family, including:

Richard and Darlene Meyer, both deceased, their family: Kathryn (Dale) Westendorf, their two daughters, Karla Albers and Kristi (Bryan) Shannon, and their children, Autumn Albers and Sara Shannon; Harold "Hoot" Meyer, Postville, their two children, Linda (Donald) Muchow and Terry (Robin) Meyer, and Dustan, Derek, and Kyle, and Leah (Andy) Hennessey and Jeremy Meyer; Donald "Doc" Meyer, Postville; Joan Plaht, Postville, and children: Michael (Linda) Plaht, their children, Brandon, Shannon, Trenton Plaht, Randy (Cindy) Plaht, their children: Lacey (Shawn) Driscoll and Ethan Driscoll, and Katelyn Plaht; and Bradley, Scott, and Larry Plaht; Fritz (Shirley) Meyer, Monona, and their son, Mark Meyer; Gerald "Pete" (Sharon) Meyer, Postville; Marlene (Willis) Livingood and their two sons, Bryan Livingood and Brent (Emily) Livingood; Darlene (Harlan) White, Postville and their three children: Lisa (Bill) Bullerman and Justin and Tyler Bullerman, Jason (Bridget) White and Drew and Kinsey White, Sara White.

Also surviving are Rolly's extended family, Marilyn Meyer, Terrie Leuchtenmacher, Deb and Floyd Schmidt and family, Don and Angela Ellis and family, and Scott and Kim Ellis and family, and many other relatives and friends.
